Thanks. It was a library table until it bumped into my saw... Now it's a coffee/cocktail table.

what's it made out of?

Interesting! I do not think it is Indian related, you may want to post in the ''What Is It'' forum.

It could be a home-made ink well.

Looks like a candle holder

It's made of stone and was found in a field that has produced buckets of artifacts... Seriously. I'll post some pics of some stone implements I found in the same area.

I was assuming it was stone what I meant was a stone candle holder.. Yes completely serious

Those are all nice but you're talking about items out of context.. I find more modern items in areas I find ancient artifacts very regularly.
I'm just saying your item does not look like a Native American artifact to me it looks colonial and it looks badly eroded.. I think it was the base to a candlestick or a crucifix or something along those lines at one time that's just my opinion

Looks like a foot to a statue to me but on the back side there is a small knob to connect to a larger piece like a leg or body. I don't think it is NA but would like to see the rest of it.
Sweet stone artifacts that is for sure.

I appreciate everyone's opinion and wouldn't rule anything out. However, it was found by my 12 yr old nephew in a small creek adjacent to the field where I have been finding NA since 1994. So... It wasn't found in a field.

I find slag cobbles in the same creek as NA artifacts along with modern items. All periods are found in creeks.

The bottom is smooth with a depression in the middle, much like the 2 pestles on the left. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1423606335.574849.webp

You posted it asking for opinions maybe it's better to ask you what you think it is

Interesting but kinda big for a pipe preform. Opps no knob must of looked at it wrong.

The top well is 1.5 inches across by 1.3 inches deep.

Can you take a close up photo of the interior walls where it was drilled?

It just does not look like anything we have seen Indian related. If it was an inkwell that old ink would have stained the inside. You are able to hold it and obviously know artifacts (nice items by the way) what are you thinking?
It could be a one of a kind. That cup on the bottom throws a wrench into it for sure.

You have caves in the area?
