First of all if they are more intelligent than us then I believe "they" will discover us way before we discover them. So they will have already heard what we have to say through our radio transmissions that left earth many years ago.

the whole question of aliens visiting earth revolves around one key feature - how long an intelligent species has the ability to advance scientifically to be able to conquer the physics of deep space travel. we, ourselves have just taken the first baby steps beyond our home world. the late 1940's, when our own quest began, until today is just a blink in time. now envision how far we could advance in another thousand years. or even 100,000 years. if our fellow star children had a million year head start on being intelligent who is to say they are not studying us right now. because if they were us that is exactly what we would be doing......long term scientific studies of as many living worlds as we could find
on anther tangent - as we discover more and more planets in other solar systems, some day we will see the night side of a world and see lights of cities shining across space and time and one more mystery will be answered....

humm thousand of years -- the gaint red oaks here on earth live that long --what if aliens also live by our standards abnormally long lives ? -- faster than light speed travel --warp drives and extended life spans or a long term "sleep" mode like hibernation --- could easily go together -- we tend to think via our limited life spans and currently highly limited knowledge base when thinking about "the others"

It would depend on where they landed. Are they going to be capable of understanding EVERY language? What if they land in the Congo among some primitive tribe that throws spears at them? Then they decide to eliminate our planet due to the attack? They could land in any ghetto and get their spacecraft hijacked or land in California and, due to their minority status, be placed on our welfare roles for the rest of their lives. Maybe they might land in Iran and show them an easier way to make a nuclear weapon. Could they find Bin Laden? Maybe they could confirm my theory that dark must also travel at the speed of light. Maybe we'd be considered a "herd" and they would farm us and eat us like we do cows. I say "No more aliens" and send the statue of liberty back to France. They don't like America anyway and you can send all of those poodles back over there too. Would an Earthling's child that was born on their "planet" automatically have all of the rights the indigenous folks have? Yep, I'd have plenty of questions but Barbara Walters would probably get the interview.....or, worse yet, Oprah.

It is so arogant of us, such a young species to decide what is impossible and what is not.

A bumblebee is NOT supposed to fly yet it does. Just 50 years ago things we take for granted today, did not exist.

The jump in computing power alone in the last 10 years has been phenominal.

I understand a LOT of the difficuties with faster than light travel. I understand at a very basic level the calculations and mathematics behind saying it is impossible.

But I am saying that other civilizations that may have existed eons before we did may have found out the solution to it. Maybe the laws of physics as we understand them are all wrong.

Who is to saw that a race didn't create a generational ship with everything on it needed to survive and they sent their ancestors off into space to travel to a distant star and the following generations kept the ship up and working and came here or is on their way?

I personally think it is presumptious of us to think we are the only intelligent life in this universe.

As for what we should say? Who knows and would they understand anything we said to them anyway?
