Hey everyone,
Had one of those crazy but good detecting days today. Crazy in as good. It all started at the favorite old park. Just me my boy and the vicious winds of nature.
I chose a spot today when we got there. We got out headed into the woods. It started slow as expected. I found a fake old ring the blue one in the pic to start the day.
A few moments after that I said to my son Jake, It would be nice to find a big silver today wouldn't it. Not more than 2 minutes after I said that I was getting a solid 85 at 6.5 inches deep.
I had high hopes for a silver quarter or half or maybe even a token. I proceeded to dig out the hole. I checked the dirt out of the Pyle and the detector was screaming.
I knew it was something good at that point. I brushed some dirt away and saw a larger disc sitting there. I said to myself what is this. Picked it up and it was so oxidized I couldn't tell at first what it was.
I had gloves on and it was cold out today so the coin wasn't feeling as heavy as it should have felt. After examining it for a moment or two I realized I had a walker.
I was very happy at that point. It was my first walker with my dfx. I've found Franklin's, Kennedy's and barber half's but no walkers. It wasn't my first walker ever though.
It was my second. I dug one. More than 10 yrs ago in the front yard of a old home. This was before I had my own detector. I was only a kid at that point using my step dad's detector.
The walker is a 1939. It was heavily oxidized and it took me almost a few hrs to remove the grey/white oxidation. It's the worst silver oxidation you can encounter.
Virtually nothing takes that stuff off. You really got to work hard at it to get it off. I also found a 1881 Indian and a really nice old watch fob.
When I got the signal for the fob it was so strong that I thought just maybe could it be another half. It wasn't but I like finds like these more than coins.
The fob is commerating the steel workers of America in Atlantic city. May 14 through the 18th 1946. I was really happy at that point with the days finds.
I packed it up and headed home to clean the finds up. On Friday I got out for a quick hr and got a nice old ring gold plate and a 1910 barber dime.
Saturday, I got out again in the brutal weather and found a 1901 v nickle and a 1897 Indian. I didn't get dirty pics of those 2 coins. Because as soon as I got home I had to go to my kids halloween party.
I didn't want to let the coins dry up and just sit there. So I set them in peroxide and finished them up when I got home.
The moral of the story is never stop believing. It's healthy to actually say your gonna find something before it happens. I've said it time after time again and achieved it that day or the following outing.
It is a part of detecting I have yet to figure out. But it really does pay to talk about what you would like to find next. Next thing you know it's in your hand.
Hope you all like the pics and story. Thanks for looking and reading.
