Naw, I called the Constitution an experiment because a Democratic Republic had never been tried before. No one knew what problems it might create. As far as the 2nd goes it still is being interpreted. People and the courts don't agree on it's meaning. People here don't agree.
The Court says you can arm yourself, BUT...... In the end it doesn't matter what the Founding Fathers meant or what the NRA thinks the 2nd means. What will matter is what the Courts decide. There are already limits on the 2nd and probably more to follow. Most Americans don't follow the NRA's philosophy and probably don't care what they think. They also don't care much about many other liberties because they don;t exercise them (speech, assembly, press etc.)
The Experiment originally gave freedom and liberty far beyond what had been tried before. Over time it looks like many Americans (US) didn't like those levels of choice and gradually gave much up. It seems clear that in the beginning a weak federal government and strong States rights was the plan. Once the States depended on Fed bucks they willingly gave their powers to the Fed. Now I hear complaints about people with their hand out. I think they had a good teacher in their States. The States have their hand out for everything.
A curious observation happened at a gun show I attended. There were lots of USA, FREEDOM, LIBERTY stuff everywhere but also a lot of stuff on how to break the law, loose your identity, make bombs, mortars etc. I think a lot of people there have a different idea about America. More like anarchy.
So while they wrap themselves in the 2nd amendment claiming they are the true Americans ya gotta wonder what the real motive is.
All liberties have exceptions and the 2nd is no different.
And no, I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

You think a lot of people at the gun show have a different idea about america and wonder what the real motive is, fine I disagree however what do you think about pro gun people not at gun shows?

hvacker: I have never been to a gun show before. I tried to go to one once, but there was a bouncer checking people for tremors at the door. When he saw how bad mine was they decided it would be safer if I didn't go in. Hurt my feelings a little bit but I can't say he was wrong.

I agree with you on the interpretation thing.
Also agree with you the state vs. federal rights. I'm not as versed in American history as most people on this site. In your opinion, when do you think the tide turned away from states rights and more towards federal rights? Was it before or after Andrew Jackson marched into SC and started kicking names and taking azz?

Here is what I am afraid of, there is a line in the sand that is in real danger of being crossed if something doesn't change, that line could very easily lead to Martial Law and a civil war....Trampling on the Constitution could be the catalyst..

Check other non-metal detecting forums, not just this one, there are a lot of people angry at what have been going on the last 4 years, a lot of people feel no one is listening, and there are a long line of grievances that continue to add up every day….. I am not talking about a few hundred hot heads; I am talking about millions of Americans that are fed up with the socialism being forced on this country…..If things continue the same way they are going it isn’t going to be pretty…

TH: A line in the sand is erased by the incoming tide. I have written several messages in the sand at low tide. Not one of them has ever survived to the next day. Civil war is always a possibility. All it takes is the right polarizing issue, a breakdown of discussion, a little firepower, and presto...I don't want this post to be deleted but that was what I was talking about when the revolution occurred on the moon. I fear Civil War much more then I fear martial law. Although, martial law is always a possibility.

Americans are fed up with a lot of things right now, and justifiably so. The welfare system is broken, the health care system is broken. However, what happens if these things don't exist? Do doctors stop seeing patients in the ER if they cannot pay? Do we turn them out into the streets to certain death? We took an oath to do no harm. Preventive medicine keeps the costs down. A walking pneumonia can be treated with antibiotics. Let it sit for a few days, patient becomes septic, ends up in the ER, and we are looking at hundreds of thousands of dolars in the ICU. Better to give them access to a walk in clinic.

What happens to the welfare recipients if they no longer get a payout? Will they stop eating and starve to death? I doubt it. Crime will rise so they can obtain their wants. Now we have to pay even more money to house them in prison. I like being able to drive down the street without having beggars at every corner. Take away welfare and the stoplights will be flooded. No cell phones for welfare?...they will break into houses and try to steal ours. Do we want our neighborhoods to be gated, locked, and with armed guards? Do we want our homes to become firefights?

I completely agree with you. The system is broken and abused. Eliminating it will make things worse...

Crispin, if welfare stoped being paid out the recipients would have to get a job. But take away the guns and your predictions will be much more likely, law abiding citizens=easy targets. Take away cell phones and they will have to do without or go back to using payphones. I am sick of paying for deadbeats that think they are owed something cause they breath air. I agree the welfare system is broken.......,but I am not willing to keep giving it out perpetually always creating a new generation of deadbeats. I learned long ago Never Make A Choice Out Of Fear. I choose stop giving it out perpetually.

Forums are just bar rooms without beer. Everyone has an opinion, everyone has a solution, nobody has any intention of actually doing anything except spouting hot air! And that goes for the World over!

Everyone has an opinion, everyone has a solution,

You were so close to be 100% right, but still on the money for the most part :tongue3:

Yup, everyone here is very opinionated, but how many ever come up with even the vaguest of solutions :laughing7:

Not too many :tongue3:

Nope, people would rather whine, and cry in their beers

Anyway, cheers to you :occasion14:

Actually, the original constitution did not give us the right to bear arms. That's why the 2nd is called an "amendment". Amendment is a change or addition to the original document. The first 10 amendments (Bill of Rights) were not made part of the constitution for about 4 years after the signing of the original document. To me, it's like the founding fathers were saying, oh yeah, and we better add this stuff because it really is important. In those days these rights were considered as "God-given" rights but they thought enough of their importance to make sure they were made an official part of the constitution. If they gave enough "second thought" to add these rights, don't you think they were very serious about their importance to our country as a whole? I do.

Ah, following in the steps of the Founding Fathers! Did you know many of them were actually anarchists? "Limited Government" was as far as they were willing to go, which is why the freedoms guaranteed were so broad and actually allowed freedoms never before seen under human government.

The problem with anarchy is that they would soon be so disorganized that any 2 bit bunch could take the country . . . even the Brits. They organized the country to provide for the common defense and to allow protections to the innocent while allowing the broadest freedoms ever experienced by citizens.

This has made the U.S. both the envy of those desiring freedom and the scourge of those who would enslave its citizens if afforded the opportunity.
