Had the most incredible day digging in the Fredericksburg area the other day. After not finding much things changed very quickly. Here are most of the finds from 1 trash pit minus some of the leather. Basically I was hunting a CW camp and had a pretty choppy signal after opening the hole signal got a little better. Down about 12 inches I saw the breast plate lying vertically and was pumped to have found that but then I noticed another shape under the breast plate and that was the US boxplate right under it. I then opened the hole and noticed leather fragments everywhere, the pin pointer and detector were screaming. I proceeded to save 5 box plates and 2 breast plates, tons of leather with hooks attached, scabbard tips, waist adjusters, iron buckles, 2 canteen spouts one with a name or carved initials, rivets, etc all in one small hole about 2 feet wide. Needless to say it was a day I will never forget. Just shows you there are still honey holes left so keep swinging. I feel so blessed to have been fortunate to save these pieces of history and certainly will be looking for more pits.

Anyone know how I can safely clean the plates and maybe get some rust off?

Amazing finds wowza

Damn son, impressive to say the least!!

Wanted to donate this fund to a museum however I have heard some questionable things about musuems(Ie losing items, selling items etc? Thoughts ?

I like the idea of donating them to a museum. Museums do sometimes get overstocked on some things and they must sell off excess to pay the bills. If you can find a small local museum that need them for display they should have a good home. A larger museum probably has all they need and unless you have something really unusual worthy of display they could all be sold off.

I am donating a lot of my finds because when I pass the kids will probably sell or trash most of the stuff except for the coins and jewelry. Do what you think is best and good luck. Stay safe and keep swingin.

Cheers to you.
A great conservator of civil war artifacts. JT

I'm not an expert in civil war relics but I can tell your recoveries were really unprecedented. Banner!

That’s is awesome! Congrats I love going to Fredericksburg. Just took my son and toured Chancellorsville and Wilderness a couple weeks ago.
Dream hole there!!!

Oh gosh... I would have died before getting half of that out of the ground. I can't imagine finding all that in a life time, let alone one day. Huge congrats! My favorite TNet find for sure. Thanks for sharing! :occasion14:
