While having coffee Saturday morning, I decided to take a road-trip to the natural spring site in SE Wisconsin
where I had found a Native American Copper Culture Celt two months earlier. It was only about a
1-1/2-hour drive so I figured that I could spend most the morning searching for additional Copper Culture
artifacts and if I was successful, spend the night at my brother's place which was only 20-minutes away
and then return to the site on Sunday morning for a few hours and head home.

When I arrived, the site was as beautiful as ever. . . no rain this time. . . and most the bugs seemed
to be taking the morning off .

The first 2-hours of hunting produced nothing of interest except for a few pieces of chipped flint (eyeball finds),
some spent .22 casings and several brass 12-gauge shell bases that were about 3-inches deep. Even though
the ground was relatively dry, digging was easy due to the sandy soil conditions. After another hour of hunting and
talking with folks that were fishing the pond (full of Rainbow & Brown Trout), I thought I'd better go to plan B and
check out an 1870's house that belonged to a friend of my brother's. After spending most of the afternoon there
and only finding a single brass coat button and some scrap metal, (is clad worth mentioning?) I called it a day and
headed over to my brother's place and had a GREAT beer to celebrate Saturday's bust >:(

SUNDAY MORNING:

It's amazing how a good night's sleep and a cup of black coffee in the AM can change your outlook for the day.

I was on the road by 9:00AM heading home when I made a snap decision to return to the spring site that I was
basically "skunked" on the day before. After two-hours of shell casings plus a few rusted can lids that were
found in one of the freshly clear-cut areas, I took a Gatorade out of my satchel and sat down on one of the cut stumps
that had been neatly placed around a newly installed fire pit just off the trail. That's when it happened.
As I was casually swinging my detector to one side while sitting down, it gave off a solid "penny" signal.
"Oh great. . . another Memorial" I thought. But, I'm here to hunt so I thought I'd better dig anyway. . . and am I glad I did!

Halfway buried on the pile of soil next to my hole was a "crusted" looking disk which I thought might be
a Wheat. . . I was wrong, I could see a faint wreath and shield! WOW! my first Indian of the year! I scanned the
hole again and another penny signal. . . another Indian! (now this is getting scary). I scanned the hole (wishfully)
a third time hoping for another signal. . . there was. . . and a third Indian! By this time, I had to literally tell myself
OUT LOUD to start working my way around the hole where I found those three Indians. . . and within fifteen minutes,
I found two more Indians. All these Indians were in an area no more than 8' x 8'.

The three earliest date Indians. . .1876, 1882 and the 1884 (which I nicked :tongue3:) were in the same hole
and the 1893 and 1895 were found maybe 4' away.

Those Indian Heads are all in BEAUTIFUL shape. :icon_sunny: You definitely cleaned some house on those finds!

Even though the Old Copper Culture site didn't produce anything of that era, you should still go back and work it some more. There has got to be many more artifacts waiting for you there.

Keep on hunting with that fever, Mr. Watercolor!

Kyle

Thanks Kyle. . . I was totally amazed at how well they cleaned up after hardly being able to read the dates. . . I'm definitely going back
