Interesting Escutcheon Plate and Brooch

On Sunday morning I got back onto a field that I first detected in 2015. I haven’t been out much this year mainly due to the extreme heat and the pain that it causes my knees. I’ve had both of my knees replaced in the past two years, so kneeling on the ground to recover a find is no longer an option. The soybeans have just been harvested on this site; everything seems to be maturing late here in Ontario due in part to the lack of rain. There was a house located here in the 1860s, but was likely gone by 1900, as most of my find’s date prior to this.

The shallow foundations of what I believe to be a barn were still visible here until 2 years ago when the farmer levelled the grade. The first relic I found was the purple glass brooch; I then found the decorative escutcheon plate. I did a light restoration on the lock plate, and plan to display it in a shadow box frame.

It's good that you can still get out and enjoy the hobby and the outdoors. I use a long-handled, small bladed round point shovel (called a "Lady's shovel"} by the Quebec manufacturer. It reduces but does not eliminate the knee work.

That sounds interesting Almy. I traded in my old Lesche this year for a shorter lighter model, see pic below. I'm actually working in Atlantic Canada the week of October 20, I fly into Charlottetown on Sunday the 19th, I then fly out of Halifax on the Friday. Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it.

It's a gooses head above a lion's head and they're made of bronze, the rest of the piece is brass.
Yes, it's nice to be able to walk upright again and to be detecting too.
