Hello, I dug this late this afternoon. Shows an eagle on the face and has the superior quality on front too. Writing on the outer edge I can't make out but this is definitely the most decorative/biggest military button I've dug to this point. Anyone able to identify this piece? Thanks!

What does the other side look like? While I have never seen an example like yours I think what you are showing us is actually the button back. Unless, of course there is a loop on the other side. If that is the case I don't know what you have.

I was thinking the same, and thought possibly a saw medallion. And -Maybe- says Sheffield along the bottom?

The writing looks like it says "quality", does it look like that in person?

definitely not the back of a button. I will post a pic below of the back.

Yep. I Googled these and sheffield is an old saw brand plus it does look to read that! Makes sense as to why it was ringing in so low.

That's what kind of tricked me. Was thinking it said superior quality like a lot of other buttons I've found here. I'm leaning towards the medallion which even though they are worth nothing I love it! Lol

Here's the back.

It definitely says QUALITY on the bottom and I can't find a saw medallion to match. If a saw medallion, it would be quite a bit thicker than a button. Is this the case? Is there a place in the middle of the back where the attachment bolt broke off?

It definitely says QUALITY on the bottom...
When I mentioned possibly saying Sheffield I meant on the bottom beneath the bottom (of the circle) that clearly says Quality.

I do believe it says Sheffield at the very bottom on outer ring. It is probably even thicker than a large cent too. Rang up wayyy lower than any button or coin. That pic you got looks so close it has to be it!

That image is from this site, which has a really impressive compilation of medallions: Saw Medallion Reference Guide - by summerfi @ LumberJocks.com ~ woodworking community
The medallion is from Turner Davies & Co.

So now I guess the question is. Is this thing mid 1800's. The 3 large cents out of here were from the 1830's-1850's.

Your exact Turner Davies & Co. saw medallion is shown at the Link given to you by Nhbenz, about 60% of the way down the page. You might try contacting that website's owner and asking for your medallion's time-date info.

I websearched "Turner Davies & Co." for you, and the only result besides the saw-medallion website was, the name appears on the SS Titanic's cargo list.
Titanic Cargo List
So we know the company was in business at that time, and perhaps a fair bit earlier -- or later. I hope the saw-medallion website's owner can help you.
