I have been detecting along RR grades at a mining village for the last couple years and hauled an assortment of spikes out. I finally put them on a display board. They range in length from 5 3/4" to 2 1/2". In the meantime I found 2 other spikes that were of different lengths and shape. Guess I'll have to make a new board.

Nice! I find those all the time here in Oregon, place is littered with them. Even in the city parks sometimes! What'd you use to finish them? Oil?

i have about a2 4 inch spike around here someplace . my father has and old railroad bedbehind his house .

pretty cool collection ,i only have the one size

grats

Jeffro, I did electrolysis on them, sprayed them with wd-40 and when that was dry applied lacquer.
wvdrummer, I found them about a mile from the mine. The original mines were drift mines and just last year they started stripping the area. I don't why the different sizes were used on the tracks. Mules were used in the mines and a small locomotive hauled coal to the tipple.

LC,
Great looking collection of old spikes! I collect those too. I can't believe how many different sizes and styles there were.
Thanks for the neat post,
MM
