Searched and old home site yesterday, built in 1840, dug this cool token or whatever it is. It says "Waterbury button co. pay check no 711" and on the other side "Pay weekly no advances no orders accepted". Just a guess but maybe during that time, each employee was given a token with their employee number, then they take it to the bank and get their actual pay for the week or month. Also dug 4 indian head cents and one buffallo nickel.

Interesting find - your theory sounds plausible although there may be others on how this piece was used. I see that the Waterbury Button Company is still in business - they might shed more light on it if you contact them.
