There was a post not to long ago about deposits, I won't to try to show you the difference. The next 3 photos are of deposits on PF artifacts. These photos were taken with a micro-scope camera. iron deposit.png iron deposit 1.png iron deposit 2.png Notice how the iron looks like it sticks up, that is from time being in the ground and it added layer after layer at this one spot. iron deposit fake 1.png iron deposit fake.png The last two photos are of fake iron deposits, notice how it lays flat and that is because it was a liquid that was placed on it then baked for a short time. Notice also that the real deposit is just in certain spots, while the fake is more spread out an most of the time all over the artifact. Also look at the color of the real deposit compared to the fake. The baked on deposit will come off with a tooth pick, while a real deposit will not just pop off. Never never clean an artifact with items like CLR, because that will remove a deposit. Calcium lime and rust is some of the items that make a deposit. Hope this helps !!!!!!!

I've seen 100yr old hit&miss engines with repo parts made to rust to appear original using that same method.
