try to tell if logs are saw or axe cut

By all means use your metal detector. It may pay you handsomely. An awful lot of the old timers used the "Clay Bank" quite exclusively.

it seems like the logs where cut by a axe because none of the cuts are straight or smooth. and I found a bunch of old mason jars around it on ground, and a old blueish tin pot.

I would test pan the creek and see what's there. There is gold in Va. As far as if it is "worth it", that depends on motivation. Personally I love spending time with my kids panning and exploring. The gold is just a bonus.

Similarly, you never know what you may find with a MD. Start hunting and have fun, I can't wait to see some photos of your finds.
