Is this a DANDY??

I dug this brass button on an 1864 permission.
It's about the size of a half dollar and is made of brass.
Any idea of it's age and recommendations for cleaning would be appreciated.

Nice button! DCMatt's date range is spot on, buttons like yours were common on coats in the late 18th century.
