I have someone who is selling a minelab explorer se for $550. They say it has only been used twice and in new condition. Is this a good deal? They say they are also open to reasonable offers. If not what would be a good offer?

I would buy it.

If it's an SE and not an SE PRO it's older. Only used twice by itself isn't an indication of age.
That said, it's a pretty good deal if it's a PRO, and not a bad price for an SE. What coil(s) does it come with?

I think it is a standard. Here's a pic.

NO, stay away! Had one for years, I knew others who had one. Long story short, I wouldn't even pay $50 for it. Incidentally, why has it only been used twice?

That's the Explorer SE, not the SE Pro. The only difference is the coil.... those older ones had a tendancy to fail at a higher rate than the newer Pro coils. But there are some who prefer how the older ones react to targets...

I'd say that's a decent price for what it is.... not stellar, but decent.

If it was so terrible why did you have it for years?

I was wondering the same thing!

I have an older model an xs and it is what I measure other detectors against. I've hunted with all the top models except the 3030 and have never felt out gunned. People say a lot of negative things about these detectors like they won't find nickels or they are no good in trashy spots and they aren't until you learn them and then they become lethal. IMO the best value in metal detecting are the used explorers.
