Hello Treasure Folks,

I found this item when we were building our house in NE Kansas.
It appears to be an axe head or tool of some sort.

Can anyone tell me any more about it or direct me to where I can find out more?

Thank you!

Welcome! Your find appears to be natural rock. I see the grove but, I believe it is natural erosion. Keep looking and good luck!

I'm sorry to say that it is a nature made rock.

Thank you for your responses!
I'm attaching another image from a different vantage point.

What is the definitive way to determine if a groove is merely part of the geological formation of the object or it was due to friction or wear?

Can you put a ruler or something of know size in the image with it? Or just post the height & length in inches?

Handle fitted over the groove.
Fold a split over it and wrap below head.
Or if you're patient ,split a live limb and leave it there.
Or split a handle and tie above ,above head.

O.P. , I'm not sure if that groove has been pecked by hand from the photo.
Sure can see why it caught your eye. From a glance it certainly looks like a crude battered axe.

Hi,
It's about 4 inches tall and 2 5/8 inches at its widest.

When I saw your post with just the one picture yesterday I thought to myself, almost looks like something, but just wishful thinking. After enlarging your new pictures I'm thinking that there is a possibility that it could have been a full groove axe where the bit end has mostly disintegrated. The groove has some symmetry and looks like it could be pecked. Also the picture in post #9 shows what looks like a shoulder where the groove ends and the right side tapers down towards the bit end. Maybe Hippy will see this and give us his opinion.

AndieM, you might ask a moderator to move this post to the North American Indian Artifacts forum for more opinions.
