I dug this 1862 Mexican coin a couple of days ago, but isn't it supposed to be silver? this one obviously is not, but thought I would ask for some insight, appreciate the help.

Test it with a magnet. It may be one of those Chinese fakes.

If its not heavily oxidized silver, it is most likely a contemporary counterfiet... Havent seen many modern fakes in the 1R size...

Ah I agree. It didnt sink into my brain how small it is. Can you see the mint mark after 1R?

Yes, coin should be silver.
I don't believe there was an assayer "FF" during this period. "C" appears as the mint mark, and Culiacan had a "C" mintmark but not with an FF assayer; and they didn't mint 1Rs in the year of this coin.

Hey Griff,
Still a neat find. The place you found that was used up until the 50s. Most of the coins in that area have been late 1800s to early 1900s. That is where I found the large Canadian Cent this spring.

So, it may have been something someone tried to pass off as real at the fair way back then. If it was silver coming out of the ground there it should look very clean. The ground there is very kind to coins.

Was nice to meet you. Hope you had a great vacation!

A far better and more interesting find than the usual silver real of the same era.
