Found among late 30s dump. The home was built in 1843 though. Solid iron. Is this an early piece of excercise equipment?

It does resemble a dumbbell.
What does it weigh?

Cast iron dumbbells have been around for quite a while.

I would say about 5 lbs

That may be Bar Shot, similar to Chain Shot, used in cannons well into the time period your home site was built. It was used to take down the masts and rigging of warships in sea battles during the age of sail.

Looks much more refined in construction than bar shot. Contoured and rounded grip, no joints, looks like a single cast. Maybe.

Yes, maybe it's just an early dumbell. The OP should simply put it on a scale and see if it comes out to a typical standardized dumbell weight, 5 pounds is my guess.

I’m skeptical as to the dumbbell idea.
More history on the property would help.
Not a lot of free weights at home sites back then; yet it is possible.

I will weigh as soon as i can, my scale isnt working. House is still standing. At some point, someone buried some glass and junk in the backyard in the late 30s early 40s. This was amongst the items. It is perhaps possible that this item was there for a longer time, I suppose. House built in 1843. Central Mass ruralish town
