Tonight I was finishing up on a job site in the middle of town. The snow has melted but the ground was still frozen. We were standing around talking before leaving and I was kicking some clumps of dirt when this popped out. I was like no way! No flakes nothing anywhere else. This whole area is developed. I have a feeling it is old but have nothing to associate it with. I do not know the material but is has a small crystal inclusion in it. Has a good bit on the base and the edges are ground on the sides.
Thanks for looking.

LOL... Nice clock

Haha mine too .. Yes I think preforms are different in different areas . There was no shortage of flint here and I also think the piece at hand or flake that was spalled was used for what it could b . You can't polish a terd haha . In other words an adze or Celt were gonna b just that . That triangle cobbs I found is a un notched preform so they say it makes sense do u agree ?

I love that clock. Something about a west minister chime

cool stuff guys....The name of this thread should be...SHOW ME YOUR ADZE !

Yes I agree. I have a cobbs knife. I never thought about it being notched though. I know it was a turd but it was…… so unexpected.. haha. Ok we gotta let this one go :laughing7:

I have preforms and they all are a lot thinner at that stage . I believe you have tools on that bench they are in need of a frame ;)

luckier than a dog with two .......:laughing7:

I guess adzes are different in design from place to place.Hardstone gouges are definetly not the same design.Adzes here are shaped like celts .

I didn't mean it like hahaha....

Picture yours worked down to a nub just a thought ;) we find things I believe that are from brand new to used up to nothing ... What is the majority of your Forrest made up with hardwoods or soft woods just curious

We have a mix.

I better go to bed cant get this right.Anyways heres some adzes. They have distinct bits.

Those are some beauties very nice get some sleep ;)

Thanks....Thats where im a heading.Do you see what i mean though?Definetly different. They probably were just used differently...

Your short ones resemble Tn mountains piece ... But I am far from an expert haha and yes I see these types of pieces are kinda puzzling ;)

I think he's just saying a completed adze or celt will usually have at least an obviously completed bit.. If not the entire object.
A celt having purposely secondary flaked edges on both sides of a centered straight bit for chopping.. And an adze will have the majority of the flaking on one side making for a slanted .. usually somewhat curved bit.. Much the same as a wood chisel since that's basically what they are a swinging wood chisel.
A blank or preform won't have that it will have a wavy look where platforms have been set up for further reduction flakes to be removed.

....tipsy Tn ? :laughing7:

Nice random find tnmountains, It sure pays to look down and to know what you are looking at. That is interesting looking material too, is it quartzite, or jasper, or something else?
