Check out this nickel I found today with my E-trac at the beach. We've all experienced iron masking but this is ridiculous! The nickel sound came through loud and clear though. It was about 6" down in the dry sand.

Not to discount the Ctx abilities but there are other machines that will do the same thing. The deal is that the two targets are basically fused together with the nickel being the larger stronger target. Separate the two and place the trash target above the nickel an inch or more and see what happens.
As info I use a CTX also so I am not a fly by basher.

He is referring to the etrac, not CTX. Your point is right on though, I have more than once dug a nickel with my X-Terra, only to find a nail... after re-scanning, the nickel is still in the same hole under the nail!

Like I said, we've all had iron masking a target. It's just not all that common to have the iron actually attached to it. When the iron starts to break down, it can produce a halo much bigger than the nickel and overwhelm the nickel signal. I just posted it as an oddity, I didn't expect to get a banner for it! :laughing7:

Kinda reminds me of the videos showing fbs detectors not hitting coins with a nail on either side but something about being in the ground they do just fine.
