It's getting better

Hi y'all. This is my 2nd new topic thread as well as the 2nd time that I have went after the older coins. Got a BH Commando from my kids for Christmas and a couple days later went to a school just to learn how to use it and found some clad. Yesterday I posted about going to my friend/pastors older church and found a 1919d wheatie and a '58 nickel on my first serious hunt which I only had 1hr till dark. Well, went back today and hunted same church and found 6 more coins. Excited is putting it mildly. Not a record setting hunt by what I read but here's what I dug. A 1936 Indian head nickel, 1909 wheatie, 1934D wheatie, 1944D wheatie and a another 1958 nickel. None can be called good shape but I guess that's normal for being in dirt this many years. This is so much fun that I can't wait each day to get off work to go detect. I'm hooked!!

Thats a terrific start you got a semi-key date wheat 1909 does it have the VDB at the bottom of the wheats? keep up the good work!

Wheat cents always get me excited... mostly because they're the oldest coins I've yet to find. Those beep-n-dig Bounty Hunters are not to be underestimated!

1909 s ?????? welcome to the addiction-----if theres an s mintmark under the date you have $$$$$

I can't see a VBD on the bottom with a magnifying glass. What's that mean if and when I find one? I hope I'm not missing dimes. I buried one in my yard about 5" and it picks it up. Also, do the coins have to be level at that depth to be detected? I'm aware that this is not a high end machine but doing ok so far.

VDB--VICTOR DAVID BRENNER---DESIGNER FOR USA MINT---NICE FIND

That VDB would be on the reverse side at the bottom.

Nice finds!

HH!

Great for just starting, welcome to the addiction!!!

I remember when I started I would rush home from school and go metal detecting. Ah,the good ole days. I feel like it was yesterday.....oh wait never-mind, it was yesterday :)

PaPaw55,
Welcome to our Addiction! You have just started the trip of a lifetime. These derectors
will have you searching er'where! You will be looking at places that before you'd never look
at twice, and now it's like " Man! I gotta find the owner of this place.....It looks killer!!!"
Oh! Yes!! it is an addiction, And it gets worse as time goes on. Congrats on the 1909 Wheatback!!
Check it and see if it has the VDB on the reverse, and if it has an "S" mintmark.................HH

...hang in there because there's a lot more stuff out there with your name written on it. All you have to do is get out there and find it...:cross::hello2:.

Here, this is what everyone is talking about:

You should probably go find yourself a copy of the Red Book of US Coins, it's an awesome condition grading guide as well as showing all different types of US coinage along with mint mark locations, mintages, and a rough retail price guide. I get one every year just to have as a reference.
