It's not pretty but I said I would find one and I did - New Jersey Copper!
I went today to a cellar hole I have been at many times. Found a bunch of old buttons - tombacs, dandys and a 1809 half cent and 1838 large cent there. But it has been a while since I have found anything much there. With all the rain we have been getting I noticed that interesting pottery and glass was starting to pop up so I went there today - first time since Hurricane Irene - to see if there would be anything to see.
I did find a few bits. Then I started detecting - I wandered pretty far back from the cellar hole - further than I ever went before and out of the blue came the nice hit
It wasn't very deep - and it paid the price in corrosion. Plow side is basically gone. But that shield is unmistakable. My first state copper! On March 31st of this year I posted this in one of my Today's Finds threads:
I don't have any pictures of the cellar hole from today - but these are from the end of October last year when I first started hunting it. The hole itself is filled with modern type trash

I am researching some early sites settled by groups out of New Jersey. I hold out hope for a NJ copper this year!
