Big cy, remember this is not a strict written patent. It is a manufacturer's imprint that the patent is registered. these may very well vary in the way they're constructed.
I used the key word "registered" with "aug 25, 1856" on a Google patent search and got zero hits.

If its American, I cant find any record of it or any patent with the word "registered" in the text on this date.

He found relics from 9 different countries at the site.

The location got its name California Gully from the 7000 49er's who worked the near by creek. It was no usual for claims to sold to others or the claim to be worked at a latter date by others. Its safe to say that supplies brought into the gold rush came from where ever they could get them from.So seeing a 49er drinking out of a dutch gin bottle, english black or german square snapps bottle would have been a common site. The nature of the buckle is different because that was likely brought from a point of origin rather than a every day need.In first years of the gold rush most miners worked own kinsman for protection and friendship. This applied to race and religion too .Eg irish catholics didn,t work with irish prodistants.

tinpan The site is well inside of the area claimed by the 49ers.

theres a hole at both ends filled with rust, a pin or steel rod ran across the buckle.Long ago rotted away. The hole is exactly in same position on both sides.

I dont have a good pic but I used to have a safety belt for climbing with a loop like that. Is it mountanous where you found it? It could also be horse related.

thanks that just gave a new line of thinking. No mountains in these parts of gold feilds today.Eroded away millions of years ago. gullies and hills. But before 1860 nearly all lifting from shallow lead mines was done by hand. Some these where as deep as 400 feet.Thats shallow compared to the hard rock mines of latter that were machine powered and was common for them to reach 5000 feet.Buckle for lifting device.I,m thinking that the best miners of this time narrows down to 3 countries Chinese, 49ers and the cornish coal miners[UK}.Chinese the relic is not but that only leaves 49ers and the cornish coal miners.

In reguard to horses ,most miners came to Australia by ship most had little cash too bring horses or buy a horse when here. At the time of the gold rush horses would have cost you a small fortune.Demand was great. The population went from a few thousand to 5,000,000 in 2 years. But horse related is possible.

For some reason history seems to for get the old common goat. produces milk, meat and leather. will eat just about anything and live quite well in harsh conditions. But was also used as a beast of burden
"A poor mans horse "and a 4 legged meal.Settlers and miners kept them. But as better stock like horses and cattle and sheep became cheaper and larger numbers the poor old goat got forgotten
