not poisonous, and it being january I am surprised it is out

It was just up from it's hibernation for a midwinter snack.

Would've shortened my hunt too!
 
It's just a harmless Garter Snake. Let him/her be and just detect around it. :icon_thumright:
 
I let go on its way, but when your not expecting to see one after you kneel down to dig you kind of want to swing the shovel. It's been in the high 60's and low 70's the last two days and now they are talking 1/2 to 3/4 inch of ice.
