It really is great when a coin can provide a 'doorway' to history/culture/mythology/religion--like your Janus coin.

And things like this make you stop and wonder a lot of stuff, like who made theses and how, How were they distributed, and what could you buy with something like this, who was the last person to hold this in their hands before it was lost to the soil and 2000 + years later recovered by a machine that could not have been conceived of at the time it was lost ?
 

One interesting aspect of coin collecting is: What is seen may not actually be what is real.
This coin is a good example. While it is usually thought to be an image of Janus, consider this:

On some occasions the ‘janiform’ style of portrait was applied to subjects other than Janus. Shown above is one example: a copper as struck c.42 to 38 B.C. at a Sicilian mint which honors the Roman warlord Pompey Magnus and incorporates his facial features into a double-facing head.
