Two Recent Hunts, Two Great Coins

I was able to get out for some deep woods detecting this past Saturday, and again this afternoon. The apparent theme for both trips was " quality over quantity". Today's trip resulted in a an older 1 real Spanish silver:

I believe its a King Phillip V 1 real. The coin is very worn and looks like someone tried to cut it in the distant past. The date is gone, but I think it was minted in Spain in the mid 1700's.

The one ( and only coin) from my Saturday outing was this 1819 US large cent. The obverse has some good detail, but the reverse is very crunchy.

I would be giddy as a school boy with those recoveries....I'm going back in time imagining a spanish soldier starting to attempt cutting your real into halves or quarters then gets distracted...anyway congratulations

Hi Gare- Honestly this time involved a lot of blind luck. I've been working my through a 1000+ acre state forest that has produced a number of colonial era finds over the years. Yesterday I was tackling a new section within this forest and not having any luck...some ox shoes, lead shotgun headstamps, and a lone, shankless flat button. I returned to my car and thought about calling it a day. However I realized that I had about 30 minutes left before I had to get on the road, so I decided to explore a small area close to where I parked. This spot was close to a water source and a variety of seldom used trails. The Spanish real showed up on a random hillside off of one of these trails. The expression..." I'd rather be lucky than good" applied here. In general I spend a lot of time exploring old wooded areas that I think have potential for holding coins/ relics. I spend most of my time off-trail looking for possible signs of past human activity ( cellar holes, stone walls, water sources, etc). I also try to leverage different internet based tools ( Historic Aerials, PastMaps, Google Maps, MassMapper, etc) to aide in my search. As an old (er) retired guy, I'm fortunate to have a lot of free to spend wandering through New England woods.

Was that you walking around Manchester by the sea...near the on ramp to 128? Exit 50.. Today? Coming out of a wooded area? probably not, but had to ask...
