Very interesting pieces, Steve.

Might they sound a pleasant musical note, if gently struck together, while suspended?

What material are they?

show connections with distant source areas and with
cultural patterns seen in many areas of the
Southeastern United States." Morhiss

Im thinking they might be like the Waller Knifes we find in this part of the USA. I actually sent you a nice one way back last yr. The Waller has a notch on the end and was thought of having it tied to cord that went around the neck. I dont know if yours has a sharp edge or not. Of course yours is much better looking than the one I am showing.

Those are neat.. I would seriously consider the possibility of them being part of a "wind chime."
I don't think they were blades of any kind they've been completely smoothed.

.

Really nice! I did some reading on the Mandan, and it was said that they were quite active in adorning themselves. Particularly their hair and clothing, so maybe they did use these items as some sort of adornment. :icon_scratch: I guess I'll do a little more research.

thanks rock
i don't see any correlation but i always welcome your thoughts
i wish you could hold one in your hand and see how polished they are....they don't have any sharp edges however
maybe next summer if i find one i can send it to you

Well with no sharp edges I dont see how it would of been a tool for working with. So as pointed out before a decoration item would be the best guess worn or a wind chime. They look to be finished to me.

What size are they?? They made some pretty durn small plummets... and some of those sure look plummetish. I would think more adornment due to the material. Maybe they were tubes of chalcedony/agate/flint???? We have tubes of agatized material here in FL that would look the same if made into a plummet but most are only a 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide...
I'm not a knapper but I sure know that the finer the material the more "TING" to it...!
Very nice unusual finds there!

one to three inches long
made mostly from petrified wood

Hope it is okay to show the two that I found there.

I think it was within 5 min. It was sitting on the top of the furrow, and the morning sun allowed it to shout out ''Over here, Yoo Hoo, Over here!''
