Just a few things from a couple honey holes

Honey holes in winter are seldom visited by busy bees, but we went to a few recently. The first set of items was from my CW site in Pennsylvania.



Minie balls, a Confederate Gardner 2 ringer, three buttons, etc.

The second set of pictures was from a very early colonial site. Lots of lead, a few smaller buttons, 2 are 17th century, several small brass tack heads, a silver cufflink and a small silver coin, English of some sort, but I haven't had time to research it. I have seen them before.

I'm not sure. Either James I or Charles I. I suppose. I have this 4" thick book on world coins. Problem is, it's 4" thick! The photo is shinier than the coin actually is. I bought a couple a few years ago, no idea where they are but I think those were "groats". I lose stuff (temporarily) all the time. It's usually right where I had put it. Frankly, I liked the 17th century buckle from last week better and the little silver cufflink better. I simply have not been able to get excited about coins since my mom took my collection to the bank half a century ago. I thought I'd get the same ones back. I did not. I have a tiny coin collection, a full set of small Canadian cents, half a dozen error coins, mainly cents I found, Spanish 2 escudo, Spanish 8 reale cobs I found, (2), Spanish pillar 8 reales, and a Spanish 8 reale pillar style. A few one reales and a couple 2 reales, including the first one I ever found a 2 reale cob I found in SC, a 1774 English gold guinea, a Netherland daadler huge thing I bought, a few Charles I thingies, little guys, inexpensive, some cut 1 2 and 8 reale wedges I found, bunch of farthings and half cents William through George III, a Victorian cent, and a hand full of American silvers. I like the old stuff the best.

In my opinion, digging a hammered english silver blows away a 17th century buckle or 18th century silver cufflink. If found outside of Virginia, even more so

Just please remember I found my first Spanish silver about 1986, so this is a quadzillion years worth of finds. And maybe 60 miles from the Virginia state line. If that.

I was referring to my entire collection both found and bought.

The only items purchased were two portrait 8 reales, 1 slabbed pillar 8 reale, three Charles I tiny thingies, they were very inexpensive, the Netherlands daadler and MOST of the Canadian small cents. I found a bunch of the Canadians doing cent rolls, started on a book, then finished the book by purchasing the rest.

My error coins were found in boxes of cents.

I found both golds, all the rest of the Spanish coins, all the farthings and half cents, and everything else. I also forgot to mention I have found two Spanish maravedis coins, both within the last year.

Here's a picture of it. I should be able to find out what it is. I have another one...somewhere. Both came from sites used in Maryland by 1660, maybe a little earlier. This one got tossed in the box of whatzits. I have quite a few whatzits in the box at this time. View attachment 1661228

Hi amazing find considering the two biggest port cities in the New World at this time was PORT ROYAL in Jamaica and Dutch East India Company in Java Indonesia TP

Thanks! Crusader and Tinpan. That's the second one I've found then, the other was 20 miles away on Kent Island, Maryland which was settled 1634 if memory serves. The other one isn't as nice. I think my site was the earliest settlement in Maryland. I didn't quite realize what it was! My oldest coins I ever found were the Byzantine quarter size coin with a saint on it (I posted that a long time ago and it was found about 1989 in SC at a plantation) and now I believe the two small Roman coins I found where ships' ballast was dumped in NJ back in WWII. I have (I think) a William and Mary copper around here, (I move and sort stuff all the time), but I saw it a couple weeks ago. I have about 30 coppers from the wreck of the Faithful Steward in Delaware I found in 2012-2015. I have two 8 reale cobs, I posted one, from the same beach but apparently not from the same wreck. That beach is where I found my only Victorian cent. And a coin blank the size of a US copper modern cent. Go figure. Stuff is where you find it. I also found a FAKE Netherlands Daadler there. That thing got me going for awhile! Someone had recently put it there, apparently, for us treasure hunters to find. I did keep it. I found out they were used as gas station promotions in the 1960's or so in sets of US colonial coins.

50 miles north on the Jersey coast I found that gawdawful ugly Mexican gold 2.5 peso.

Nice hunt!

I always wondered what the little brass posts with the hole in the top were. I also wondered what the brass disks with the square hole in the middle were (they give the best sounds). Well I found them together the the other day. Drawer pull pieces.

That's funny, I found a complete set a couple weeks ago myself with an oval escutcheon too. These pieces seem to be found individually, but rarely in combination like this.
