just a musket flint (English)

I've found several musket Flint to this point but for some reason I have found nothing but French and Spanish today I finally found what I thought would have been the most numerous in the area a nice little English one

That's a good find! How do you know the difference if you don't mind me asking? I have found 3 in the last year but don't know how to tell the difference on them. All of mine are made from the same color flint as yours. I gave one of them away to the land owner though.

Thanks rock...The difference between Spanish and French will be a little tough to show you in a photo but the difference between French and English is pretty clear the butterscotch color is French.
That's how to tell the difference as far as how I know the difference or there is a difference that's from research

Well as far as I know I haven't found any butterscotch flints. All of mine have been dark flint. I remember thinking they were broken Paleo scrapers or tools due to what I thought was a flute on them. I took them to the last show and a guy told me they were flints. Same thing you told me last year.

You're not the only one that has made that mistake.
One of my buddies I had hunted with for years was showing me one just recently telling me about what a cool little scraper he just found

Are they always square or can they be a different shape?

Here are some French and English Gun Flints to show the difference. The French are all made from a honey colored Flint and the English are all made from a dark black Flint.

The natives in my area also used local stone to make Flint to trade to the Europeans and use in muskets they acquired

I went and got my other ones out for the pic.
The last 1 is the same on all sides but very small, maybe spent?

The part you're holding towards the top looks like it's got that pulverized edge they get from use.. I'm not sure that's English flint but people were making flint from local materials for a very long time.

If mine is a flint it is the 4th one I have found in that area where I have permission to hunt. Its about a 2 mile stretch of land. I haven't found them all in the same place. I have found some slate in a few places out there. Slate being from old homes. Nothing left to know how old of homes they were though.

I have to wait till the crops are all up before I ask. 2 places are rite out in the open and Im not sure how the owners would feel about it. Im going to ask though

Don't go out there with a big shovel and make craters just use a small spade flip over a clump find your object and replace the material back in the hole nice and respectful so it doesn't look like you did anything when you left

A few that I've found. They are either spent or natives worked them down. I'm not really sure.

Haha.. You're so funny those are musket balls.
The term you used is actually "Minie ball" ..Minie is the last name of a Frenchman who is credited for the invention of basically our first bullet.. Before that round balls were used
