Great find!

That is most definitely an old bell, and from the looks of it there is also
a bullet hole in the side!

Could easily have been an old church bell, so yes, let it soak for awhile
and see if the markings (maker?) show up.

What's a good thing to soak it in.?

I'm interested in knowing where you found this. You state a time frame of the Mohician Indians to H. Hudson, which would denote the time prior to 1609. I'm not aware of any location that may of had bells with the exception of a French trade outpost from Montreal? Champlain only discovered the lake in the same year as Hudson found and named the river, both in1609. The main reason I'm interested is that my ancestors date to this time period in the Hudson Valley, and some still reside on some of the original land.

In addition,Welcome to Tnet from Lake Champlain. Very nice find!:hello2:

Near schodack landing. The Mohicans landed there and Hudson came after that. . Maybe it was the Dutch later on that moved farther into the farm lands.

We were thinking it might be from a horse collar or an ox would wear it. Maybe even a fancy carriage .

Looks like a funeral bell that would be mounted on a horse-drawn hearse or the horse tack.

I found cleaning metal items with baking soda and water works well.

I found a similar bell at a dump sight where most items have dated in early 1800s
That's not to say it wasn't in use for many years before it was tossed.
This was found near my home in upstate NY

I am near Albany, where are you.

Camels even wore big bells during Civil War times but they were usually decorative. I hope you can find out more about it soon.

Coat or soak in Olive Oil for a few days, it will soften and loosen the dirt. Then VERY GENTLY scrub with a toothbrush and soapy water.

CoinHunterAZ has my vote...soak it in olive oil, use a VERY SOFT (child's) toothbrush to ever-so-gently wipe away surface deposits.
I've had very old metal virtually disintegrate (read: "BREAK!") when I removed the dirt that 'held it together'...

Very cool find! Please post pics when you have it all cleaned up! Pretty Please!? :love10:

Can you post a picture of it with the bullet like hole showing positioned next to a can for size reference. I'd like to see it standing up
