Just wondering for those of you who say that you wait for a promo to list more items... Wouldn't it make since to open a store esp for the holidays? You get 150 free listings. More then likely you will pay for the store with one sale... I mean, it's $15 a month. I have had the $49 store for ever. Get a lot of promos, list up to 10,000 items! I'll never have that much, but why would not opening a store for $15 be a better option then having things sit unlisted....
Not to mention you get a discount on shipping as well.

My brother has had a store on eBay for about 10 years and is pushing me to open one - and I will. Your post does re-affirm that! Right now my world is full of too many distractions to do it now at the present time. But in time for Christmas sounds like a "sound" approach!

I think if you close it they charge you the month ahead of time as well. So if you closed in February you would pay $30 total. But you may never close it.

That's good information! I don't think I would close it, I've too much junk somebody else might like to have!

One of the features that has always tempted me is that you can put your shop on vacation. If you have to leave all of a sudden it is very easy to deal with, but without a store you have to painstakingly end all of your listings. I've been thinking about a store, but I have shifted mostly over to etsy at this point so the 50 free listings per month on ebay holds me over alright. Now with the loss of free re listing I might reconsider that.

Do you sell much on etsy?

Just wanted to point out:

You do not get 150 "free" listings. You are paying $15 per month for these listings.

Just saying... If you are going to open a store you should be thinking like a business owner.

Are fixed price listings their own category for free listings? When we get 150 listings with a store, does that include fixed price, or are their separate "free" listings reserved for that category?

It is one of the last things I am confused about, whether fixed and auction listings are shared in "free listings", or whether they each have their own alloted free listings each month.

A lot of my electronic stuff I list fixed price with good till canceled. I am not sure if every thirty days I am being charged, or if it just takes off a free listing credit everytime the listing renews.

I actually do most of my business on etsy. I opened the store a little over a year ago, but I have only really been using it since last winter. It takes a little while longer for things to sell, but due to the fact that there aren't a gazillion sellers like ebay, it's a lot easier to be competitive and get your stuff seen. I also charge a lot more for stuff on etsy, mostly due to the fact that I spend a lot more time on the photography and general curation of my items. I sell predominantly vintage clothing which is quite popular on etsy, so it makes sense for my business model. I have almost 600 items on my store and I make a sale or two a day, so it's definitely working out for me.

Right. But if you listed 150 items without the store your paying $45 at .30 each...

I just got a promo to list 3000 items. I may not never use that!

I think opening a store is a fine idea... if you have the time to dedicate to it, in order to achieve financial viability. For me, it's not an option at the moment.

I am not sure your math is right. For me, it never made sense to open a store. 150 listings for $19, including BIN. BUT, I get 100 free listing a month, not BIN. I've been listing all my stuff in auction format, with a BIN, so in a way it solves that problem. I have yet to list 100 things in a month. Now they are going back to the auto-relist for free system. Every time I used the ebay calculator, it always tells me not to get a store. I am wavering right now, because I have a lot of stuff to list for the holidays. I think it is very individual if it works or not.

If you are listing around 100 items a month, it's not going to be worth it. If you are listing 300 items it's a no-brainer. It also makes your listing easier to browse through, since you can categorize them.

Wait for real?

I got an email from them recently about it. It will only be relist for free twice though, not three times. Mine disappeared a while back. I called Ebay about it, and they said it was an experiment for select sellers. They were debating about rolling it out for everyone. Ha! It's coming back today!! But I won't turn it on until Jan probably. I will be listing less then.

Dear Leah,

As a seller who has taken advantage of our automatic relist feature, we are writing you today to inform you of recently-announced changes, which take effect next month:

Starting November 6, items relisted via the automatic relist feature will count towards your monthly allotment of free listings*. Once your allotment of free listings is used up—or if the relisted item does not qualify for free listing—the standard insertion fee of 30¢ per listing will apply, as well as any optional feature fees.
Starting later this year, the automatic relist feature will no longer be available for 1- and 3-day duration listings.
The automatic relist feature currently relists an unsold item once. Starting November 6, if you are opted-in to this feature, your item will automatically be relisted up to two times.
Note: You will be credited—either via your free listings allotment or on your invoice—for insertion fees for these relistings where the free automatic relist feature was selected prior to November 6. The manual relisting policy will still apply.
When listing an item, be sure that the automatic relist option is either checked or unchecked, depending on your preference. Note that before choosing this option, you may want to check the Selling section of My eBay for any personalized recommendations to improve your listings.

As always, thank you for selling on eBay.

Best,

The eBay Selling Team

I got that as well, I'm pretty sure what it is saying is that ebay will still re-list items automatically, but now instead of being free each re-list will count towards your monthly total of free listings. I made a thread about it called "farewell, free re-listing".

With a store you get a FVF reduction.

Some categories you get a deep discount.

"Computer/Tablets & Networking and Video Game Consoles ---- 4% of the total amount of the sale"

So for example:
If I sell a laptop for $500 the FVF with a store is $20
Without a store the FVF is $50

That is a savings of $30 on one item
