Never found while metal detecting a 1965 coin before, until now, anybody have the same experience? In 2.5 years with over 250 coins found, why are 1965 coins so rare?

I say 1965 dimes and quarters have the F U mint mark.
 
No problems with '65's here either. Glad you finally stepped over the right spot to find one.
 
Keep in mind there were some 1965 SILVER dimes and quarters. During the transitional silver->copper-nickel period occasionally some 1965-dated silver dimes and quarters were accidentally struck during the transition. They are very rare, but they are out there, so always double check.
 
People knew what they were dropping, they just were very careful in dropping any silver..

You are correct a Quarter or a Dime would actually buy something. If you did drop one it was shiny and easy to find.
