If you want to do some amazing research on this I recommend you take a look at wwww.newpapers.com they have archival journals dating from 1600s till now all scanned and you can search for words directly in scanned documents. I used it a lot to get information about my area before doing a detection and it's amazing the information you will find.

You could also employ science. Here's a nice interactive geology map of Kansas.


You can see every known mine and barrow pit by turning on the map layers in the "Mining History" tab on the right. Use the "i" button to get all the known information on the mine. Lots of good stuff on there so spend some time looking around. :thumbsup:
