After the last few months of getting back into the hobby, I have come home mostly empty handed other than pounds of junk and a few "tweens" pennies and dimes. I've come full circle to the first ghost town that I learned to detect on. I pounded this place hard for years until it didn't produce much of anything... then moved on.

Anyways, I spent 3 hours there today and used only my M6. I turned the discrimination to zero and really listened to the tones. Surprisingly I got 2 wheats, a piece of silver spoon and memorial, proving that no site is truly hunted out. Then I got a perfect zinc penny signal and dug this at less than 2 inches. I just can't believe I left this behind years ago.

This is actually my second 1909s indian. The other was several years ago and in much better condition. I'm still absolutely thrilled to be lucky enough to get another one. My local coin dealer said it's a $300 to $400 coin even in this condition.

I'll definitely be going back.

Banner!

I'd give some serious thought to improving that coin, but it has to be done right.

Awesome find!

I found many 1909 IHS, but never did get that S not yet anyway...Congrats to ya...:occasion14:

Awesome find, key date IH in fine shape! congrats! The sweet little M6 didn't let you down!

Very awesome that you found such a great coin all these years after quitting the site. As my dad used to say " you just weren't holding your mouth right" before ( hope that makes sense to everyone, lol ).

Try not to clean it too hard, it'll decrease the value! But nice find, I would be ecstatic to find even a Wheat Penny, let alone an Indian Head Penny, or even a key date of either type!

Great Indian Head! I have only dug two (1884, 1895) in my 8+ years of hunting.

Terrific coin, my vote is in for banner. We sure don't see many 1909s Indians posted. Only 309,000 were minted, far few than the beloved 1877 which had 852,500 minted. Congratulations!

Awesome find! Banner nomination for sure. :icon_thumleft:

Thank you for all the kind words and the banner nominations. (which I didn't expect)

Congrats on the great find! To have found two of those is simply amazing! Have you ever found a 1908-S??

Continued success to you!

No, I have not found a 1908s. However, I did find a 1908 plain in absolutely perfect condition. This thing was uncirculated when it was dropped and it had no corrosion. Of course it was dark from being in the ground for 100 years.

Rhedden, I feel your pain. To lose your bragging rites even on a thrashed coin is painful. I did the same with a few that I tried to clean and ruined.

Those dark old IH's that look bronze are beautiful! Absolutely better looking than brilliant ones in my opinion.
