Well I decided I was hunting today...RAIN OR SHINE because I took it off from work. I just got back about an hour or so ago. :icon_sunny:
Sunday I was talking with a family at church and they gave me the nod to hunt their yard which is a pretty nice sized property. It isn't very old...built in the early 1950's...but they said they used to hold big gatherings there when they were kids. I figured there might be some silver there and boy was I right. It wasn't old silver...but silver is SILVER...and I'll take it. ::)
There was tons of trash in the yard. Everything from pulltabs to can slaw...to a lot of broken wire pieces. It seemed to me that the silver was pretty deep for 50's silver....7" to 8"...and it was right in the midst of the trash...but easily distguinguished itself from the garbage with a nice high tone. I plugged along "low and slow" and after 4 hours...had 6 silver coins in the pouch along with 12 wheaties. :headbang:
Another neat find on the day was the Eisenhower dollar and the Kennedy Half in the same hole. Talk about a rush...I don't care if it wasn't silver...it was really cool to plop the half out of the plug...then probe again and hear it sing...then plop out the big dollar coin. :headbang:
After about 4 hours the old neighbor guy from accross the street comes walking over and I'm thinkin' ...Great...he's seen the earings...long hair...and tattoos....and he thinks somethin's "goin' down" in his neighbor's back yard. ;D So I paused...took the earphones off and prepared to be hassled. ??? Boy was I wrong. :o He was just curious as to what if any coins I was finding. He then proceeded to tell me his house was much older...built around 1900..and that his side of the street was all from that era. I guess they hadn't cleared off the land for development on the side I was hunting on until the 50's. He then gave me the nod to hunt his yard...yippee! :tongue3: I agreed to give him the first silver coin I dug...IF I dug any...just so he would have a momento...and he was thrilled.
He was really excited now and asked if he could tag along with me and see how the SE worked and watch me retrieve things from his yard...and that was fine with me.
Only had an hour left to hunt by the time I ventured into his yard but I made the most of it. Found ONLY two coins in his yard...but what do you think the first coin I dug was??.....a Key Date 1905 O Barber dime!! :tard: :blob3: Why couldn't the FIRST silver coin I found be a 1945 MERC OR SOMETHIN' ELSE?? ;D ;D :D Well...a deal's a deal and a Christian's word is his word...so I plopped it in his hand ...and his face lit up. He then told me I could come back ANY time and keep any and all coins I found. :icon_sunny:  Just goes to show you "What goes around comes around"...hey it's tattooed on my arm. ;D The barber was wedged in a hard sand/gravel mix in the yard which was strange...and hence has a light but wide, noticeable surface scratch between the ear and eye...and it runs from the hair down to almost the chin..oh well! It came out of the ground looking mint other than the blemish on the face...but upon closer inspection...none of the liberty is readable at all on the head...so it would be a VG-F coin at best anyway even though it looks nicer. The back is very nice though. Even though it was his coin now... I found it...and It just urked me to see the wide blemish down the face... but it was wedged in gravel for 100 years so what can I expect? About 1/2 hour later I popped out an 1882 Injun. Before leaving I asked him if I could take the dime home and scan it so I could post it...then return it to him...and he was fine with that.
Somewhere down the road I'll probably try and pick one up from a coin show or dealer. It doesn't even have to be as nice as the one I found...just so I have one for my finds collection. I have never collected or bought any coins. I just love detecting and finding silver coins and collect ONLY what I find. From 30 years of hunting......I have a wheatie collection...a Merc collection...and a Barber dime collection. Heck I could probably pick one up for $20 to $25 and it was worth every cent to see the look of amazement on the old fellow's face when I set it in his hand. :angel12:
All in all it was a very nice 5 hour hunt and I got me seven silver coins including the 1905o Barber dime...an 1882 Injun...12 wheaties...and the IKE dollar along with the Kennedy half.....AND I made a new unexpected friend who gave me permission to hunt there again. :icon_cheers:

Bryce, that is so cool..you did what you said you would and that shows the kind of guy you are. Highly commendable.

I love private yards..my neighborhood was built in '58 and I've dug LOTS of silver Rosies, and also found silver quarters, tons of wheats and a Franklin half.

It's also neat how you got another yard by hunting the first one..I've done that as well in my neck of the woods and it allows me to stay a bit longer in neighborhoods that are loaded with old coins.

It does your reputation as a hobbiest and a decent guy to give that Barber away and NO doubt the guy certainly appreciated it !

I know you'll be back there and perhaps more Barbers !! :headbang:

HH !

Derek

I love it, and the talking to the owners is great to because you always get some kind of info on the area. Awesome finds and great job on the 1st silver to the owner, That there did more than anything to assure a good and trusted relationship with the owner and future owners around there. I always like it when they come out and thank you for making you digging holes so neat.
Best Regards and super finds, Ray

It was the agreement, and the right thing to do. I have often had kids trail around with me, and they have to try the detector, help dig, etc. The last time, I had told the kid that he could have the next coin, and it turned out being a fairly "rare" wheatie- the '33D. Now, I know it could take years to fill that crazy void in my wheaty folder, but we had a deal. The kid gets the scarce wheatie, and I am left with tears and integrity.

Not as harsh as your dime, but I do loves me wheaty folder.
I love my wheatie folder too. Every now and then I put one in it's spot. Just 3 days ago I put a 1930d in
It's strange how many fairly common dates in my folder are still empty :icon_sunny:

Excellent finds Bryce! That barber looks really good.........after looking at the scan, I thought I was going to see a freak ding on it, but it looks very presentable to me. Very well documented hunt and I can only hope to one day walk into a situation like yours where an interested on looker offers up his yard for detecting!

Looks like a lot of good "goods" there.

Doing the good deed will more than pay for itself in finds that you are yet to make. :icon_sunny:

Hope you are able to find a lot more at the old guys place.

More than makes up for the Cubs and Sox games yesterday!
Nice digs!

You are on a wilver roll, big guy! Maybe the adjoining neighbors will grant you the necessary permission, too? :icon_sunny:

If you believe in KARMA you just made a huge deposit into the Bank Of Karma!! By giving up that coin on your word you will reap many returns. HH

Too bad about the Dime...At least this way, you'll have plenty of times to hunt the yard. Great finds, Cool Pics and Killer Story...Congrats and HH

HH,
Nat

Thanks Nat. I do mostly park hunting... but really enjoyed the yard searches. At least I have another place to hunt..and as you said...maybe a few more people on that street will give me the nod. I'm not real good about door knocking...but if I bunp into someone at church...that's a different story
