I have a place that I have been working since last summer. The area has indian/military history going back to the mid 1700's. Two military expeditions (1764 and 1777) each with over a thousand men. Most my finds as of yet have been stuff that really cannot be dated. However, just last Sunday I found a shoe buckle tine that dates to the 1700's and just this past Thursday I found this coin. It's a King George II half penny. I believe they were made from 1727 to 1760. Something like that. Anyway, it's in the time period I'm looking for. I would almost assume it was lost by a soldier from one of the expeditions. Why they had coinage is a mystery. A coin is the last thing I expected to find. After looking for nearly a year I think I have found a productive spot amongst the many acres of ground to be searched. I have gone the last two months or so with more disappointment then decent finds. And then this. Persistence pays off.

Yes definitely a George II halfpenny, only you posted the 3rd issue which is the older head George and your coin is the younger bust. (Circa. 1729-1739)

Many thanks for the correction Iron Patch.
How can you tell it is the younger bust?

I've seen each thousands of times so it's usually obvious, even for dug coins. There's many differences, the easiest to pick out is most likely the hair.

Thats a fantastic coin! ... Great find! :headbang:

Wow you must be thrilled. Keep working that site, there may be more :icon_thumright:

Maybe a coin from Henry Bouquet's expedition in 1764. If you are on one of his camp sites you should be finding musketballs and tombac buttons, and yes coins. I have hunted a number of his camp sites here in SW PA. Get a copy of The Henry Bouquet Papers, volume VI. This book has a most of the correspondence written between the officers during the expedition, plus narratives of the negotiations with the Indians.. A number of Bouquet's letters are post marked from camps on the Tuscarrowas and the Muskingam (as spelled in the book). Then again you have Fort Laurens and Crawford's expedition during the Rev War, plus all the 18th century indian villages. There is definitely some interesting 18th century material to be found in Ohio if you can get on the right spot

Very nice finds! I grew up in Tusc county, maybe we know each other. I detected the outskirts of Schoenbrunn once, found a button that dates to the site. HH, Mike
