does anyone know about jesse and or the kgc in nor cail
There is a hotel in Nevada City that has an old registry and among the names in it you will find Jesse James' name. This registry is well protected under a glass case so you will have to get permission.
as for the KGC in Northern California, my research found they operated in Yuba, Plumas, Sierra, and Nevada counties.
Gibsonville, La Porte - Plumas County
Rough and Ready, Nevada City, Grass Valley - Nevada County
Marysville - Yuba County
KGC had headquarters at McGinnis' hotel on Washington Street in Columbia - Tuolumne County
It has been rumored that a large KGC Depository lies somewhere behind Nevada City. With the many years searching the area a likely spot is at Edwards Crossing on the South Yuba River. Why this spot? I prospected that area many many times and on one occasion I was running some material thru my sluice box when I heard a noise behind me. thinking it might be a large cat or something else I turned to grab my gun and that was when I saw this very faint red hand print on the rock face. At that time I knew what that was. I had no equipment nor other resources to continue looking, but I did make a very good mental note of where I was on the river. My research came up with a picture of what the crossing looked like back during that time, and who was living there. A William Edwards moved to the crossing in 1867 and operated a toll road/bridge. With everything else that went on in this area - mining - it was the perfect place to put their/KGC gold. with it being close to the river I believe the site to be rigged with water traps.
now for the site location. It lies between Illinois Crossing and Humbug Creek on the North side of the Yuba. Granted a lot has changed (2015) since I was out there I am sure it is still there. Get you a good TOPO or stop by the USFS office in Nevada City.
I have another little tidbit on the James Family.
Rev. Robert James died in Rough and Ready in August 1850 shortly after his arrival in California. He is supposed to be buried next to a W. H. Maxwell, both from Clay County, Missouri. I was unable to locate this cemetery to verify this info.
Yuba Light Infantry Co. E 1st Battalion 4th Brigade N.G.C.
Organized Nov. 7, 1863 - 80 members
The company was the outgrowth of a Union League Club organized to counteract an organization of the Knights of the Golden Circle - said to exist at the time in the county.
