A few weeks ago, I took my family on a bike ride and ended up at the park. I had conveniently brought my metal detector along (strapped to the back of our baby trailer), and did a little detecting. Nothing! Well, my 6 year old took a few swings and found a Washington quarter, marking the first coin plucked from the ground this year for our family.
A week later, I got up at 5am, and headed to the same park, and detected for 2 hours, and found nothing but a nail, and various bits of metal. Not a single coin! Obviously pretty picked over, so I need to get creative at that park, and do some more research -- it's a fairly old park in the area, but certainly not the oldest.
A few days ago my Garrett Pro-Pointer arrived, and I've been anxious to try it out. Been too busy with work, chores around the house, and getting ready for a family trip, that I haven't been able to try it. Well, last night, I got the bug. I somehow managed to find one of my kids forehead mounted LED lights that they had in their room, without waking them, and geared up for my first night-hunt in my backyard.
No amazing finds, but in about 20 minutes, I had plucked 8 memorial cents, and a Roosevelt dime. But considering in 20 minutes, I found more in my own yard (previously searched by me), than I did in a park in 2 hours! Maybe that means I am getting better at my detector -- or possibly that I should just skip the local parks, and do more private property searches! That guy I always see in the parks with a GTI 1500 might have something to do with it.....
The Garrett Pro-Pointer is really nice -- I noticed it really helps speed up my recovery time. My old pin-pointer (Sherlock DTS-PRO), works, but is really just a beep, or no-beep pin-pointer. You can detune the DTS-PRO a bit which helps a little. The Pro-Pointer, however, changes it's tone (and vibrations) as you get closer, so this helps narrow down your search quickly.
