Well folks, Schloopy and I got invited to attempt some nice finds in Kansas this past weekend at good ole' relikhunter's. We all met up at relikhunter's house on Friday, got reacquainted since the hunt in Otterville last year. Had a lot of catching up to do so needless to say on only about 2 1/2 hours of sleep a piece we set out the next morning at 530am for some spots that had been productive for the relikhunter. Our day was long, hot, discouraging at times and not all that productive. The cards just weren't in it for us. We ended the day with some stuff that we didn't even attempt to identify. Oh, but Schloopy did find 7 cents in new coinage. Yeah, that was our day.
Before the day ended though we had scouted a field for some Indian artifacts. We didn't find any but did find lots of pottery, old iron, and glass shards. Thinking we may have found an old home site Schloopy said that it may be a good idea to come back the next day and swing the detectors. All agreeing we made for home and rested our old bones. Well, relikhunter and myself anyway....
The next day we headed for the cornfield. Withing 15 minutes Schloopy had found the first coin of the day.....An 1880 Indian head penny. We knew we had hit paydirt. About 30 minutes later I got a strong Quarter signal on my DFX....And I mean strong....Pinpointing told me that it was directly under my coil less that half and inch...I thought garbage of course but then told myself that the field had been plowed so anything is possible.....I reached down moved some dirt with my hand and out popped a quarter sized disk with a layer of dirt over it. I called the boys over due to my excitement, asked relikhunter to give me some good news......He reached down, turned it over and to our surprise saw the glint of silver...Upon cleaning the coin we saw an 1897-S Barber Quarter......Whooooohoooo! Now we knew we'd hit the right spot.... Turns out that Quarter is a semi key date with only about 530,000 minted....It wasn't in the best shape but who cares right
? Well, after the quarter find we pretty much prayed right there that it would be relikhunter's turn next.....After the quarter it seemed the big iron and small rivets were the only thing we could dig. We were all getting dehydrated and tired and I know we were all thinking about leaving......It wasn't late but it sure was hot....Some time later, after about another two hours of sweating and trying not to twist our ankles on the plowed field relichunter says, "I think I got one boys"!!!!! Music to all our ears... Out pops a 1903 Indian head penny. We all had something. I think that was the "Q" to leave and live before one of us stroked out!!! Ha, ha.
Relikhunter definitely has a hot spot now. Some rain or another plowing will surely turn up more that just three coins. I envy him in the fact that I'm not close enough to keep hunting it with him.
All in all it was a great weekend to see each other again. Find a few keepers and plan some up coming hunts.... We have some in the works so look for more post!!!!!! Hopefully!
Here's a pic of the Quarter...I had to scan it. One day I'll buy one of those high speed cameras.... Have to find more clad to pay for it I guess.....LOL!
HH all!!!!!!!!!!
