✅ SOLVED Large button puzzle for your perusal.

It has been suggested that this is from circa 1760. I don't know. But, if it is I figure it
deserves enough respect to at least try to identify.

The pictures below are from many angles, orientations, different amounts of wet/dryness. It's about as
clean as I think it's going to get.

It's non-magnetic and weighs around 8.5 grams.

I'm figuring a common ordinary button. I do see what I think is some sort of pattern
on it, but my eyes just aren't good enough .

So, if you have some time and/or just like a puzzle. Take a peek and see
if you see a pattern and if it's one you recognize.



In any case, I'm not expecting much.
But anything that might be over 250 years old is worthy of a respectful try.

Your button appears to be a 1700s-to-early-1800s "spunback" (meaning, lathe-finished) 1-piece button made of "White-Tombac" (a silvery grey-ish brass alloy). Most of that type are flat. (See the diagram below, which shows the 4 basic forms of 1-piece buttons, with time-dating.) Yours is an uncommon variation of the spunback/lathe-finished type, being low-convex (low-dome) in shape. Also, it appears to have a hand-engraved floral emblem on its front.

I suspect that is as close as I'm going to get. I had figured circa 1760-1820. There seems to be a pattern and floral
was pretty much what I saw also.

I actually tried that but the convex surface made it too difficult for my unsteady hand to work.

The pattern in the middle appears to be a engraved five-petalled flower with sepals, this pattern appears regular on Tombac buttons of the same period. Nice old find

Thanks double-S . That's pretty much what I was going with, it did look floral to me as well. There is two almost perfectly formed
diamond shapes. I just couldn't pin them down.
