I spent a few hours this past weekend searching a wooded area next to where a grist mill once stood. I was very happy to find a large cent, though it is in rough shape. I am pretty sure it is an 1838, but I wiped the date off with the gentle stroke of a toothpick… aarrggh! Also found a few buttons, one of which says “treble gilt - standard colour,” so possibly British. Some miscellaneous finds include the tops of two change purses, I think, a buckle, and an old pin with a mysterious woman’s face on it. Finally, I dug this hollow tube with some intricate floral designs on it. It appears to be brass and about 3 inches long. Any ideas? Thanks for checking out my post. Happy hunting.

could it be trench art?
I don't know if there is a 3" long rifle shell out there. Something like a 300 WinMag maybe.
That’s an interesting thought. Doesn’t really have the feel of a bullet casing, but hard to say. I may have to read about trench art, as I have no experience with it.
