Hey everyone, hope everyone is staying safe out there. Crazy times will get us treasure hunters stir crazy. All cooped up for awhile now so I finally loaded up the truck and shook off the winter blues and went searching for a pit or two to dig. Great weather and the sun finally broke out. So we got on site and started probing and found three pits all in a row down the property line. The houses that were here are all in the 1880-90 circa so we had our hopes up.

First pit which was closest to the back of the house that was there was about 5 feet deep with major roots. Cut our way through those and down we went. Found a six pack of 1880-90 tooled meds. All slicks. A little plateware and typical broken meat pots. Did manage one druggist bottle from Rome NY. Not much in that one. Moved to the furthest one back from the home. A good 5 x 5 foot privy. Not but a slim area of coal ash at the very top and then sand the rest of the way. Within 3 feet we started pulling out blob beers. Figured like they were dropped in when the hole was being filled. Charles Krueger and a William Martin beer. Nice finds but man we were just getting started. Clearly in the mid 1890s now we went down another 2 feet and hit the massive Use Layer. About a couple of feet of Use. Started off with some embossed meds and a pile of Ale bottles. One acid etched one with White Label. Never seen that before. Numerous other slicks, a broken whiskey jug and some sarsaparilla bottles to add. At the base we popped out a bottle from Huron Dakota. CY Durand. Must be a territory bottle cause I think it’s from the 1880s before South Dakota became a state. It has some lip damage but I figure someone might collect those so I kept it.

It was a fully loaded pit for sure. A nice spring start. We always probe for more and found three more in the adjacent yard. They all feel like they are equally full of glass too. Should be a few nice days of digging coming up. Good luck out there everyone and I hope everyone stays healthy throughout this crazy time. Enjoy the pics. Stay safe. Jgas. Great recoveries. Looks like you have a great system.

I sure hope you have a great season! You sure dig up some keepers. I'm looking forward to seeing more. That Dakota bottle and stove polish bottle sure are nice! I hope the pits get older but those are beautiful!

A great pit to start the year, beautiful array of finds. I love those fragments with the white splotches, the meds, and the crockery. Good to see you back at it, stay smart and safe and healthy, jgas!

Great dig Gassy...

Nice bunch of bottles, and in great shape, too! Thanks for sharing.

Great diggins! Like everybody else, I'm liking that Black Flag, but you didn't mention it in your write-up. Was it whole? If it is, I'd love to see what it looks like.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yeah the Black Flag is whole. I wasn’t impressed by it all that much being a stove polish but I’ve cleaned it and it’s really growing on me. Love the flag of course. It has some pretty good sickness though. It’s a keeper for sure. Jgas. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1585952511.110401.webp

Thanks for the "fix" I needed to see some dirty bottles. Now I am ok until next time.

Wow, what a difference cleaning made. It looked cobalt in the first picture! Love the embossing.
