Let's all rally to convince this guy to stop

This guy in my opinion is just killing it for our this hobby.. openly broadcasting the idea of CRHing on Ebay... great just let everyone know.. and eventually everyone figure out they can get them for face value.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300570968905&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:US:1123

I sent this guy a message to ask him to please stop and re-evaluate his logic on this. He's shooting himself in the foot or our feet too. Maybe if other people here can send him a message, he'll stop too. I don't have a problem with individual coins for auction or maybe even a few rolls every so often but massive wholesale rolls for sale is just down right bad for the hobby. Like I've said, if everyone did this, it would over real quick.

It's kinda of scam in a way since he doesn't note that the majority of the rolls will not have silver. Praying on unknowing people and giving them ideas of CRHing.

I'm just asking other TNet members here to send him a polite message to convince him to stop this practice. It's just bad for the hobby long term. It's also bad for people who want to sell individual pieces on Feebay because it gives buyers ideas on where to get them instead. We don't need to be rude but a well written message to him and hopefully from enough people will get him to stop.

I THINK THIS IS PRETTY SAD TOO.. NOT SO MUCH THAT THE GUY IS DOING IT, BUT THAT SOMEBODY WOULD ACTUALLY BUY INTO THAT B.S.... WOULDN'T SOMEONE JUST ASK THEMSELF, "HOW IS THIS GUY GETTING THESE COINS?"
ANYWAYS, I AM NOT ALL THAT FAMILIAR WITH EBAY. IS THERE ANYWAY TO SEE HOW MANY OF THESE HE SELLS? AND WHAT THE PRICES ARE THAT HE HAS SOLD THEM FOR? I AM GUESSING THAT IF THE GUY IS MAKING MONEY DOING THIS, HE IS NOT GOING TO STOP, OR EVEN CARE THAT A BUNCH OF PEOPLE SEND HIM MESSAGES, NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY. IT'S TOO BAD THAT THE SHEEP ARE WILLING TO FALL FOR THIS B.S...... I THINK IT IS CRAZY.

Re: Let's all rally to convince this guy to stop

Don't forget, he gets $9.99 for shipping. When 10 rolls will fit into a $5.00 ship anywhere package in the us.

What a RIP off artist. Maybe report his post as fraud, he says the Fed in the post and we all know that is not true at all.

Re: Let's all rally to convince this guy to stop

I did report it as a fraud. He did use the Federal Reserve in his posting to lure more people into believing his BS.

Re: Let's all rally to convince this guy to stop

You can look at his feedback.. he's sold a bunch from various price ranges. I haven't seen anyone on his feedback say that they got silver in their roll.. Of course, it's possible to find silver yet the possibility is slim which is something this guy leaves out. You figure that he probably weighs the rolls and sells ones less than 226.0 grams leaving out the chance of getting any 90%ers.

With Ebay's 12% commission which they also charge on shipping too, he's not making a killing. Probably just 5-7% for himself. There's just a lot of naive people out there. Newbie collectors that fall for this. It's a perceived rarity because halves don't circulate much so new people fall for it.. Eventually they'll get the idea of getting them from banks which promotes this hobby which is bad. Awareness is bad for this hobby.

In think if people write him with enough messages, he might stop.. he also sells single coins.. why would people buy his single coins when people can find them in his rolls or even from the bank? duh

He's just ruining it not only for himself but everyone else. This guy just doesn't realize it.

Yes, it is impossible to get coins from the FED directly. I've actually called the FED in San Francisco 10 years ago because I was trying to get brand new 2001-D halves at the time. I don't live that far away. That was when the 2001-D's first came out and each roll was going for $40 on Feebay. Of course by some curse, I have a bunch now and yet they are not worth much over face.

The people at the FED bank of SF told me that in order to get coins from them, I have to go through a bank or I have to be a bank. They do not serve private citizens so this guy is lying that he got them directly from the FED not a local bank.

He's also pumping up prices for 1982-D halves? Since when do 1982-D's carry a premium for regular circulated coins. Uncirculated yes but the coins as he states are circulated. He also mentioned 1983-D as a coin to watch out for? This guy is a joke.

I think I will play the contrarian on this one. Why worry about a guy on eBay ? There are more visitors to this forum everyday than he is getting views on his auction. Fraud is hard to prove on this one. How many times have we been told by tellers that they get all their coins from the Fed. The tellers are wrong and so is this guy. There is not much difference in what he is doing versus the guys who made out like bandits selling unopened rolls of Lincoln Cents.
Coin Roll Hunting is no longer a big secret. Our biggest competitors work at the banks. Word gets out that silver is on the rise and every teller becomes a silver hunter. When we order box after box of coins, this big old bell goes off with the tellers. They ask what we want boxes of halves for. What do we do, lie and tell them we are having a poker party. We are all searching the same coins looking for the elusive silver that some dumba$$ missed in his search.
Look at the current crop of posts, there are a lot more misses than hits. The more populous an area you search in, the more fellow searchers you have looking at the same coins. We are making a fortune for the guys who make the boxes and the wrappers for the halves. They have been on break for years and now we are making them work overtime to wrap and box halves.
I say we all take a tip from Apush, take it easy, have a brewski, and chill out. All the best, Jim

You didn't read the auction details.. he said he got the coins directly from the FED not local banks which I know is not true... As I mentioned earlier, the FED will not sell boxes to people directly. You have to be a member bank to get coinage from them. He's lying about it so that his box seems special but it's not. Just the way this guy wrote the description and how 1983-D halves worth $7.00 is wrong.

Also Ebay has 100 more times traffic than TNet. Ebay blows TNet out of the water. CRHing by asking for rolls is one thing but learning to order boxes is another. I stubbled onto searching boxes by accident.. I didn't have some forum back then that told me all about it. I started with rolls, then later on some Bank employee told me about boxes that can be ordered. Had it not been for that, I would not have been ordering boxes for a while. I do disagree about the scope of it.. Ebay has much more traffic than here and hence is bad. Would you like an article to be written on CRHing on the front of the New York Times or Wall Street Journal?

Increased people doing it will lead to the end of CRHing.

Re: Let's all rally to convince this guy to stop

Looks to me like they are just capitalizing on folks who will jump at the possibility of finding silver in half dollar rolls. P.T. Barnam said it best. You know - about suckers being born...

I agree this person should not tout them as FED rolls, but then again there are hundreds of auctions on EBay that I have seen over the years that have made fraudulent statements. Such as a coin that obviously is not a proof by its mint mark. Or tout it as being in uncirculated condition. Unless you took it out of a mint bag, it has been circulated - no ifs, ands, or buts.

Plus, this is not the only person that has auctioned off rolls of halves. And there are hundreds of auctions for unsearched rolls of pennies that have a Merc dime on the end. Or an Injun on both ends. Or a 3 cent silver. Wow, I can't imagine that there are literally thousands of rolls like like that have never been discovered.

My 2 cents. I could say the folks in the northeast are messing up my chances of finding silver here in Oklahoma. Or that by some folks getting 12 boxes everyday is messing up my chances. There has been a nasty thread about that one on here.

LMAO! He's not breaking any laws. SFBay needs to chill. The silver is going to dry up sooner or later anyway. I'd worry more about finding my own share and less about what everyone else is doing. The cat is out of the bag. If y'all feel the need to "Rally To Stop" someone, I'd try the guy who runs the blog that is the first google search result for "Coin Roll Hunting".

Not breaking any laws but deceptive advertising? Since when is a circulated 1983-D half worth $7.00?

Yeah, CRH is out of the bag but it doesn't help that it gets promoted. With shows on TV like "Storage Wars" and "Auction Hunters", everyone knows about it now. Before, I never thought about that concept. At least I know where to go if I want to buy cheap furniture. Who knows there might be a CRH TV episode next on some reality channel.

The truth is that there isn't enough Half Dollars to go around like pennies and dimes. Not enough were made so that if everyone did it.. it would dry up real quick. Many people never considered ordering halves and that banks could do that. I remember years ago when a guy saw me pickup a box of halves and the guy said that he had a few halves but was shocked at the quantity that I had by just ordering them. I'm sure he ordered some for himself after that.

I guess it would make more sense to hit up less known denominations like dimes.

Re: Let's all rally to convince this guy to stop

So this guy responded to my e-mail:

"First of all you need to find something better with your time other than searching Ebay to bitch about what people are selling. As far as what I sell, people can buy alot of things just by going to the store. But instead they buy it online. Why? Because these are the times we live in. So please do not email me anymore. "

What a jerk man.. I wasn't being rude at all on my email. Maybe, I should sell my rolls of unsearched halves there to and charge less than him.. if he wants to be a jerk.. however I'm not going to do that because it would hurt this hobby. Maybe someone buy a roll from him and give him a negative? Saying that they expected a silver or found a 1983-D half that they couldn't sell for $7.00. LOL

I'm sorry to have to tell you this. CRH is nothing new. Being a member of a CRH forum doesn't give one exclusive rights to CRH. It doesn't need to be advertised or promoted. And I'll bet there are probably thousands of nice folks that CRH and have been for 40 years. Silver coins will dry up - until people realize they don't really know what to do with all those silver coins and they end up in circulation again. Or the hoarder dies and the heirs dump it. Or they will end up in circulation again because they are going to give it to their grandchildren. They might as well spend it themselves because little Johnny could care less about something like coin collecting when he has all kinds of other things to keep his pea brain entertained. He will use it to buy whatever pea brained kids nowadays spend money on. Yes, I'm older. And I have been CRH and bag hunting since 1965 when my father and I started.

No but someone buying his rolls or who saw the auction that lives in YOUR area will think gee I got a skunk roll that I bought off of Ebay, why don't I ask my bank if I can get them?

Also, there's nothing one can do against someone who puts up unsearched rolls but yet writes stuff like "1983-D halves" are worth $7.00? That isn't wrong?

At a minimum, this guy should change his description. Does anyone have the link to report to Ebay?

Re: Let's all rally to convince this guy to stop

Of course CRHing isn't anything new.. just like Storage Locker hunting. However with promotion, it leads to overcrowding. I listed an example of myself never realized about Storage Locker hunting until I watched "Storage Wars" and "Auction Hunters". Is there a storage locker hunting thread here now? It just doesn't need to be promoted. Besides this guy's deceptive ads claiming that 1983-D halves are worth $7.00, this guy's auction is promoting it in my opinion. At a minimum, he should change his description. I wrote back to this guy about his $7.00 1983-D halves, I'm sure he's still going to be a jerk about it and not change it.

Didn't he say that his coin book says that? it very well could be in one of the books... prob the same ones that say are silver coins are worth under spot? we all know those are way off

A jerk? Really? I thought he was rather polite in his reply. He was definitely much nicer than I would have been. I have a feeling I would have told you where to go and even suggested an activity you could do with yourself when you got there. :laughing9:

As far as false advertising goes, I don't see any. I just glanced at the PCGS price guide. It lists an MS60 1983D half at $6, so I have little doubt that his book might have it listed at $7. As far as mentioning that the coins came from "The Fed", I'm sure thats what he was told by the bank. Every single bank person I have ever spoken to has told me that they get their coin from the Fed and they ship their coin back to the Fed. Every single bag that I have purchased from coin machines that have already had the info printed on them and ready to be sent off had "Federal Reserve Bank" printed in the "To:" section. Now I know that the coins go to and come from coin courier services such as Loomis, Brinks, etc. However, the Fed has just outsourced this service to the the coin courier companies. Its not a blatant lie. Saying that it is is just splitting hairs IMO. His ad may be a bit misleading, but isn't all advertising a bit misleading? Its the nature of the beast. For example, "World's Best Coffee", "Highest Prices Paid", "Everyday Low Prices", etc.

There are many reasons these rolls will sell at a premium. The biggest one is that a box of halves is $500 and most banks (every bank I have ever dealt with) have a 2 box minimum before they will order the coins. A lot of people don't have an extra $1000+ laying around to play with. I personally think its pretty smart on the seller's part. After seeing 3 rolls sell on eBay for about $60 around a year ago, I considered doing the same thing. Even at a 5% return, thats $25 profit per box, or about 5 40%ers. My boxes don't average anywhere near that. I chose not to simply because I enjoy searching the rolls. If I was in it strictly for the money, I'd order the boxes, sell the rolls on eBay, and use the profit to buy silver. Had I done this from day 1, I'd have more than 4 times the silver I've found just from boxes.

The seller has every right to sell those rolls on eBay or anywhere else for that matter. Whether or not it effects the future of your or anyone else's future finds from CRH is debatable, but completely irrelevant. I could make the same argument for every post you or anyone else has ever posted on this forum. Trying to get his ad removed or even giving him negative feedback is WAY over the line and just plain ol' vindictive. Personally, I think you (and everyone else) would be much better served by simply minding your own business. I think you should just leave the guy alone.

Again go read his ad.. it's deceptive.. it says his rolls came from the "FED reserve not just local banks" but we all know that you had to go and get the coins from your local bank because the FED doesn't sell to you directly. Yes, we've all heard the term FED rolls before but he's claiming it as though he didn't just get them from his local bank which we all know that he did. He's using the symmantics to make his box sound special.

Any place that touts "top prices paid" for items and is not paying close to the competition is a deceptive and a scam in my opinion. "Everyday low prices".. no one believes that crap.. I tune that stuff out evertime I see it. I would never put that with anything I sell unless it was true. Apparently some of us have lower standards.

Haven't we also had previous posts on this forum complaining about these guys who dupe people with these auctions for unsearched halves? It's obvious that we can all do this but we don't. Why? Because we know it's a way to basically scam new collectors and we have the morals not to do that. I've thought about it too before in my ten years of CRHing but I don't. I'm sure many others that do boxes have thought about it but we don't.

Also his auction doesn't state that 1983-D "MS condition" coins go for $7.00 in his book. It just says those years. Yeah, why not put up MS70 prices while he's at it? Yeah quote MS69 prices for 1983-D halves.. LOL He states that the coins are circulated. He's making it sound like ANY 1983-D half dollar is worth $7.00 which is not true. No circulated 1983-D is worth $7.00 or else I'd be a rich man with all the 1983-D halves I've come across throughout the years. The whole description is misleading. Leaving out details to mislead new collectors. Put yourself in some new collector's shoes. You're taking advantage of new naive collectors. Does that make you feel good?

Also again, Ebay gets a lot more traffic than here. Obviously it's newbies that see his auctions and bid on them. That's the difference in my opinion. Ebay has a larger audience than here.

ONCE AGAIN, GO READ HIS AUCTION before you're going to stand up for him. I'm just tired of people immediately taking sides without looking at the facts. DO IT BEFORE HE CHANGES IT.

Re: Let's all rally to convince this guy to stop

After reading the e-bay add, I really cant see any difference in his add, then someone selling metal detectors, and saying that you can find treasure. Most of us only find some coins, maybe a ring or two, but how many of us find a "treasure"? I really resent these companys selling detectors to everyone, and hope that my detector will be the last one sold, but...........thats just how life is.
Im sure this guy is not making a killing, but of course, it feels like he is taking something from us. If your at a park, with your detector, tomorrow, there will be another with their detector, and next week, a couple more.
I never even thought of CHR, until I seen this section of TN, so actually, everyone here is in some way promoting this hobby, so at the same time, making more competition.

I will pick up my first box tomorrow!

I just had a real problem with the way he wrote about his box came from the FED not local banks and also how 1983-D halves are worth $7.00. Which are all misleading. He states that it's possible to find silver which is true and indisputable but making blanket statements that 1983-D halves are worth $7.00 is false. People who open those rolls will waste time to keep some worn 1983-D half thinking that it's worth $7.00. LOL

This guy needs to be specific is stating that "MS" condition halves are worth such and such according to his book. Otherwise people get the wrong idea.

And I just thought it promotes this hobby to some extreme degree. You stumbled upon this section and got the idea yet can you imagine all the people that see his auction on Ebay that get the idea too?

To be honest, I've done metal detecting. I've tried it. Albeit, I'm a newbie to it. I have admit it was a lot of work for loose change. People are not going to jump into metal detecting because of the heavy labor (lots of digging) and the low yields but I can see people easily get into CRHing. I have made a ton more from CRHing than metal detecting. CRHing is just a lot less costly and more profitable in my opinion. It's basically a free casino trip. Although some advanced metal detectorist who finds gold might disagree.

Isn't that one of the rules of CRHing that someone posted before? Do not talk about CRHing? Apparently with media technology now, there's no stopping it.
