I know a little bit, mostly from working with a friend who is an expert. We use it to look for effigy mounds; like those at Effigy Mounds Nat'l Monument and all over the country.

You do not need expensive equipment unless you want to do your own survey. Datasets for pretty much everywhere are online already (that has been my experience anyway). Just google around for your area of interest.

Then you download a viewer; most are freeware, and prepare to be amazed. You will see roads, mounds, and other contour features that are harder to see on general aerial photos.

Sometimes you have to play around with the viewer a bit to get it to work or get it to look how you want, but in general a very easy process.
