"lightning Hill and Whipstick Forrest alluvial gold fields" pic and finds
The Whipstick is the name now applied to the low hills streching north from Eaglehawk to Raywood in the west and kamarooka in the east.(about 80 square miles) The hills are covered in dence Mallee Scrub which forms an impenetrable barrier to prospectors when gold was discovered at Eaglehawk in 1852.The gulliesin the immediate vicinity of Eaglehawk were found to be extremely rich. The Whipstick forrest slowed the diggers and it was to be 12 years before they had worked their way to Kamarooka 22 miles away.
Lightning Hill produced numerous large nuggets in particular the largest ever found in the Whipstick.below lightning Hill is the Whitehorse Gully and this where the largest nugget was found," THE WHITE HORSE" at 573 oz"s.
Gold can still be found here in small pieces and the odd oz nugget is found but you need plenty of rain to wash the gold out.we have not had enough rain over the past couple of years, so there's no point mding for gold.
There lots of camp sites and mine sites to m.d and you can always get a few relics and the odd coin.
I went for about 4 hours today and didn,t get any gold but i did find the oldest silver coin todate, found quite a few coppers with early dates but much silver of this age.I found a british silver shilling 1878 with a hole in it .Gee i wish people wouldn,t do that. .theres some pics of the finds and of the site. The first pic i,m posting is the secret NT summer bunker sort like a geff holiday house.
