Little Bro's Flint City Plummet! 11/2/2013

Here's a plummet my little brother found yesterday 11/2/2013. It's a pretty nice one, It's wore through right where the drill hole is. It almost looks like the underestimated how big the drill hole would be and it wore right through.
Here's a video of the find. You should subscribe to our Flint City channel!

Forgetting anything that's been said about plummets... I'd be real inclined to think things like that would have been used to hang and stretch stuff like fibers or innards..and Mabey even spin them.

I never thought about that Gator. You've got my mind turning now.

It would explain why there was several in one area.
Look up stone loom weight and see what you think.

Man I never even thought of that. But it is definitely a sensible theory. Would they still be considered Plummet? My grandfather calls them Plumbobs, if not, what where the purpose of actual plummets?

I've found dubble grooved ones that would work perfect as spacers halfway up the threads.
I hope it's OK posting these.

It just seems like that's a category of artifact that's left on accounted for to me.. we know they made clothing.

No harm brother, post away. Those do look like spacers. What kind've material is that? Ours are all made out of Hematite..

That's greenstone from Georgia.
The "plummet" was found more than halfway down the East Coast of Florida.
At a site occupied from approximately 800-1300 ad.

It's awesome. I honestly never thought about them being used for hanging and stretching. I just kind've thought of fishing net weights, or maybe decorative pendant type things.

how much woven fabric is associated with your area?

Not much survived anywhere.
Just because the conditions for preservation didn't exist.. doesn't mean the material didn't.

I couldn't even tell you. The site produces primarily Archaic artifacts. I'm not sure what they were wearing or weaving back then.

Submerged archaic sites have been unearthed here with preserved woven fabric.
Some of the best preserved sites in North America are in this state.
Check out the "Windover site"..for some great examples of preservation.

I am an old soul I guess. I have always hunted with older cats. I call these plumbobs, just as the old cats do. In fact, it makes perfect sense, to me, that they were used as plumbobs. Some of the odd shaped ones, probably not. The ones that look like our modern plumbob, why wouldn't they be? Nice find by your bro. No matter what their use was!!
