I found this lock at a the site that gave me the walker half and aviation wings. Does anyone recognize the makers mark on it? Doesn't the RFD make it a postal lock?

My understanding is the RFD meat "Rural Free Delivery" but I never seen one quite like yours.

Thanks for the info. I have searched many, many images and finally found one similar stating it was a Slaymaker brand. Going by the dates on the other items I found at this site I am guessing it is a 1940s vintage lock.

Your stylized "S" stands for Slaymaker. RFD does stand for Rural Free Delivery just like doublet2a mentioned. Not sure what the original purpose was for, but not an expensive lock so wouldn't have done any more than keep honest people honest.

I think it was used to lock the mail bag.

Usually actual PO locks are numbered and way more secure.

I had a slay maker lock and key in the 70s
I found that if you use my key, you could open lockers, about 1 out of 6 times
Also remember, if you filed down the teeth except for the end of a master lock it would open any master lock brand lock
