Hi Allen, You'd have to measure the diameter of the bullet but it looks like a post Civil War 45-70. After 1870. She has patina on it so she's been in the ground a while

Indian Wars era? :dontknow:
Congrats on the finds,

Your bullet is definitely post CW. I would go with the 45-70.

Nice reliquary....congrats!

good, I was worried it was a modern slug.
One side close to the tip is flattened where
it hit something or gulp, someone !
Thanks for the replies everyone !

Great looking locket Allen! :icon_thumright:

Do you think it was gold-plated at one time?

Yep, I would say 45-70 also. A few years back, I dug about 50 of them at the site of Fort Crawford
in eastern Colorado. I believe they were used in the 1870's to the 1890's or so.

I am still shooting one today

nice old Basketweave locket!
Congrats on your lead, I got a few 45-70s, big slug, sure wouldn't want to get hit by one

"Congrats on your lead, I got a few 45-70s, big slug, sure wouldn't want to get hit by one "

That would leave a real nasty and permenant mark on you !!

Nice bullet and ornate locket Allen. Those 45/70s are a big bullet. That bullet is not a big deal out West but I have never found one in Tennessee out of over 2K+ CW bullets not including modern bullets that I have dug. HH and stay cool Bud, Quindy.

I had to buy my 45/70. I have two sizes, longer and shorter, the shorter I figure was for the carbine. If I remember right without digging them out of my storage, the shorter one has a smaller hole in the base. And from something I read here a night or two ago, wouldn't the shorter bullet be a 45/50? I don't know what the /70 means in bullet terms, but there are definitely two lengths for the same bullet. More enlightenment, please!
