Perhaps a primative J-grab for skidding on a serious downhill skid with a team or a simgle horse .
I don't know how to post pictures of the process but it was a hell of a hard way to make a living .
I'd be willing to elaborate if anyone is interested .

First off, you're in the wrong category, but I am sure a moderator will move it for ya. Now as for what ya have found, it looks like something that was longer and they would build a frame on either side of cook fire, and place this on it and hang cookpots from ir, over the fire...........NGE

lumbercamp, this is just a guess, but it might be the bottom grab of a cheap cant hook; one that was so cheap the guy couldn't aford a factory made bottom?

Taking a second look I don't think it has enough hook for either of our guesses .

judging fromwhere the nails are bent, it was on either a board or a pole no thicker than 2" inches. Would that eliminate the j-skid runner?

Looks like a pick pole or variation there of to me.

or maybe... a Peavey are the hooks on the end adjustable?

Lumbercamp, take another look at a cant hook (here is a modern example with a steel enclosed base holding the short right angle bottom spike)
What you found conforms to the exact same thing, except your's is "cheap" (primitive requiring less ironwork) and depends on rivets rather than a cone base:

The rivets on your's are the right length to go through the bottom of the pole, and better than that, the upper rivet is slightly longer which woud be correct for a tapered pole base!
In addition the position of the short spike on your's is at a right angle and is correct in both size and position.
I'll stick with my first guess and say this is almost certaily a cheap cant hook bottom grab. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...2vzFAQ&sa=X&oi=image_result&resnum=5&ct=image

Johnnyl, you might be right. I have found my share of peavys around here but never a cant hook. I may have to go back and see if there is a hook near by that would have gone with it.
