Long Live The President... George Washington Button..SHOCKED!!!

Was out detecting a brand new farm permission. I only had about an hour to hunt before I needed to leave to pickup my daughter.
Parts of the field were freshly ploughed. Other parts were 8" tall grass.
Can slaw after can slaw I trudged the field.
First good signal was an 1820 largie

Next signal was a fake 18k gold ring

Then right before i was about to leave i get a signal that sounded just like a small piece of can slaw.
But a bit cleaner sounding.

I popped the plug and pulled out a small cuff button.

I noticed that it had some writing and gold gilting on the front.

When i got home I lightly went over the front of the button with some lemon juice and q-tip to bring out the gold gilt....

My jaw dropped...
A George Washington Inaugural cuff button!!!

Researched in my book to confirm and indeed it is a WI 17B!!

Banner vote submitted. That's a great historical find. Congrats. The variety of GWI button is seldom posted, and it has killer eye appeal owing to the contrast of the gold gilt with the overall patina.

I dug a great US Navy button from 1795-1810 or so two weeks ago, but it shattered while I was brushing it with mineral oil. I never thought a brass button could be so fragile. :sad10: Oh well, live and learn.

Fantastic find! There have been a couple others posted here, but that is still a Banner find. My vote is cast.

King George III had a strong distaste for The Colonies
In fact he found them revolting
