duh...duh... DFX
The weekend started with an impromptu hunt Friday after work with Mirage. We checked out a foundation spot that hadn't been hunted yet. Bob came away with a nice Merc and some wheats. I found more wheats and a decent 1915 Buffalo nickle.

Saturday and Sunday I decided to "share in the bounty" of the new area and brought two different groups in. Saturday Dave (Zoso here on TNet) and Don (from the DFXOnly site) came along for what was literally a dawn to dusk hunt. We started in the area where all the large cents have been found (I was hoping Don would get his first) but it looks like Mirage and I cleaned the area out pretty well. The three of us pounded the area hard. I came away with some beautiful old buttons, including one of those huge "Dandy" buttons with the shank still attached.

One of the other flat buttons had a nice design on the back

Here are the buttons I found Saturday all together

Towards the end of the day, in the last area we hunted I pulled an 1883 Indian Head in outstanding condition! This IH is FAR cleaner than anything I have seen come out of the ground, with a nice dark green patina, sharp full details and a non-porous surface.

Here are all of Saturday's finds for me, including numerous musketballs, both dropped and fired and the tops from two oil lamps

Sunday I went back with Bob and Nate (after a great breakfast at a local hole in the wall 24 hr restaurant)
Here Bob and Nate unload gear. The orange vests were needed because we shared the woods with bowhunters.

While all I found was a few modern tokens and some wheats, Bob and Nate both scored. Near a VERY old foundation and well, Bob pulled an 1893 IH in what should be great condition.

And the Nate finally found his first large cent, an 1827 Coronet. Here it is uncleaned.

There are still over a dozen sites in this area that I haven't checked out yet. I am sure there's more to be found.
I also want to get back into the well area where Nate found his LC with my camera (I left it in the car) to take some pictures of the "haunted" wall I found. It is huge and stretches off into the distance forever. All stacked stone and in the middle of nowhere. Twice I was spooked as I swear I heard my name called from behind me. Twice I turned to find no one there. Later when I asked a bowhunter in the woods about the wall, he laughed and said that it was supposed to be haunted. It was very creepy and I am not one to be disturbed by stuff like that.

HH all!

Dan,
First off, great looking IH!!! Congrats to you.
How many cm is that dandy button? It looks huge!
You guys always come up with some very productive spots to hunt. Sounds like there's not much room to swing with all the overgrowth. Do you just work in and out of any of the small flat open spots as you hunt?
That wall sounds very cool. Looking forward to seeing some pix.
I get the same creepy feeling when I am by the cemetery on the farm I hunt. There are huge old fallen down blocks around it, and sunken in areas where the bodies would be. :o No headstones.
Great post Dan.

i want to know more about that wall! i love that kind of stuff! hearing your name called in the middle of the spooky woods next to a haunted wall would send me packin'!

congrats on an otherwise great day!

:o Wow, great story, great pics, great coins and finds! Keep us updated on the "haunted wall." Sounds intriguing. Keep digging!

Great research as usual Dan. Nice finds all the way around guys.

Good luck next trip.

Well Doug
The button is 36mm in diameter exactly. Round shank still intact. Of all the old flat buttons I have dug it's the coolest (and maybe the oldest...maybe someone here could help date it)
In heavy growth like that just stay in pinpoint all-metal (non-motion)
Non-motion's the key, as you can tell when you get near a deep target even if you can't (at first) swing the coil right over it. If a bush or somethings right over the target's center, then my Craftsman root saw comes out ;)

I'll be back there Sat. with Spencer and get some pics of the wall then.

Geez, 36mm is huge! My largest button so far was just last Saturday, and I thought that was big (29cm).
You guys keep up the great hunts.

several emails asked about the seriousness of my story about that Oknorom...I swear I heard my name. Not once but twice. Loudly. Both times I took off my headphones after jerking my head around quickly. First time I remember the hairs on the back of my neck standing up like that. :o

Dan, I wanna go, I wanna go, LOL. Gary and I are ready to do some serious hunting. LOL, we really want to find some of those elusive busted coins.

Looks like you had a great day again. I really like that Indian Head penny. Looks great. You don't find them in that condition very often.

HH all!
Nice buffalo. I've yet to find one of those.

Looks like maybe a trip tomorrow (Halloween) night is in order to the wall. I'll try and get some decent flash pictures. The permit says I have to be out by 10pm, so no midnight walk :-\

Oh yeah...satt. images show the E-W portion of the wall to be just under 1500 ft and the N-S section to be around 2000 ft long.
Quite the structure.

Hey man,

First congrats on the finds!! ;D

I just have two main things to say. One, those old wells you should see if they are searchable. As you should know people used to make wishes in wells. I know of a story where a guy found a wishing well on his land and uncovered 5 foot area by 5 inches deep full of old coins. The 2ND thing is when you go up and get pictures if you have not gone already. Bring a Digital Recorder and try to get some EVP's (Electronic Voice Phenomena.) If you don't know they have discovered you can get the voices of the dead on digital recorders. Its all over Google http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=evp

Keep @ it and HH!!

Oooo....a spooky Halloween story...Take a picture so we can see some orbs. :D Great post, Dan. :o :o

Congratulations to Nate on his first Large Cent!! :)

Not even two minutes ago my co-worker who was to visit the wall with me tomorrow chickened out.

A grown man...

Guess it'll wait until Saturday with my son.

Cool finds looks like a nice place 8)

Congratulations to Nate on his first Large Cent!! :)

I'll be back there Saturday Mona...and maybe take some video of the wall as well.
And as to "orbs"...I'll just make sure the lens is clean and that'll take care of orbs. :D

Even with what happened last week with hearing the voice and all I'm excited to get back there. Too bad I had no takers for a trip there tonight :-[

First… I must apologize for the delay on getting these pictures online.
It seems my camera cannot handle the metal detecting environment
Here in Northeast Ohio.

So here it is..

We started the day early when I met up with Dan & Don at the new site
Dan had researched. After going over some old maps and satellite photos
We geared up and headed out the spot where Mirage and Dan picked up
A few LC’s…

It didn’t take very long for us to get to the spot and I was ready with the 4x6 coil .

After a few minutes of wandering around (I have problems with staying in one spot too long) I ended up a small hill next to an old well and foundation. The amount of scrap iron in the area almost had me back out wandering again. The last signal I dug fromthat area turned out to be a neat little Star Medallion, It looked just like a decoration on a kids cap gun holster.
I threw it in my pouch and headed into a different direction away from the iron signals
A few minutes later I was hunting tight against some tree stumps (the 4x6 coil really gets in there) I hit a signal that screamed “NICKLE” with visions of a “V” nickel in my head I dug down 5 inches, Battling tree roots and rocks. Out pops a suspender clip. I re-scanned the hole and it still showed a decent signal. Then out pops the other half of the clip. With a really nice design… Shortly after that we decided to try a few more spots
Towards the end of the day we decided to hit one more spot. A short walk through the woods and the spot was located. Dan who was not that far away from me yelled out “Indian Head” on the radio. I walked over and he found a 1883 IH. Within a few minutes I was digging a solid $1.00 signal at 8 inches. I took my time and gently removed the soil
Inch by inch..I didn’t want to “nick” anything that waited below……

Ahh…. Who am I kidding.. I couldn’t dig that hole any faster… one scoop of soil and I seen the silver looking back at me….. I brushed away the remaining soil and I knew it wasn’t a silver coin.. More of a Silver Plated Pocket Watch (Westclox Pocket Ben)..
On the way back to the cars it started raining harder and that’s when my Camera got soaked…

A few days later while cleaning my finds.. I washed the “Star” Medallion under soap and water.. I noticed there was some writing on it.. A little peroxide and a gentle brush bought
Out a little more writing.. Under a loupe I read “United Confederate Veterans Reunion 19?? Nashville, TN”. I started looking on the internet for more information on this item.
I found a few pictures of medallions from the “UCVR” that were collected from other
Dates. None of them had “Nashville, TN” on them.
A few more hours of research turned up a listing of a “United Confederate Veterans Reunion Medallion’s” from Nashville in a University’s Archive. But they did not have any pictures posted. I e-mailed the University’s archive department to see if they could
Post a picture of what they had and match it up to mine. Two days later I received an E-mail back. They told me that the medallion they have is in bad shape and they can only make out the words “Confederate & Reunion” as well as the words Nashville. They then asked me “ Are you able to read the entire wording under a magnifying glass”. The only thing I couldn’t see was the last two digits of the date. To make a long string of E-mails short.
They asked me if I was interested in selling the medallion to them ? At a very nice price I should say. Or willing to donate it to the University’s Archive for a tax receipt for double
The cash price. I haven’t made up my mind on what to do yet. So I’m going to hold on to it for a little bit. I did see a few Medallions from reunions go for up to $500.00 each
But they are in great shape. Mine is pitted and bent. But the offer still stands according to them. So here are some pretty bad pictures of the days hunt.. Thanks again Dan for the invite!
